In the Blood: Wanna Dual

Everybody knows a win is always good, but some wins are more significant than others and serve as a milestone in one’s career. Just ask Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Rider Chubby Turner. Turner has won a lot of cuttings over the years but never the Augusta Futurity. After 38 years, that drought came to an end when he rode Wanna Dual to the 4-Year-Old Open Championship in Augusta this year. They scored a 220 to earn a $10,000 check.

Wanna Dual was purchased by J5 Performance Horses LLC from Ty Cole Performance Horses at the 2016 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity 2-Year-Old Sale. She was bred by RCJ Cutting Horses LLC, of Euless, Texas.

Turner and Wanna Dual’s win gives us an interesting pedigree pattern to look at. Her pedigree (Dual Rey X Zacks Fifth Avenue X Zack T Wood) showcases a balanced pedigree, or a pedigree that shows a breeding pattern with key individuals or crosses spaced throughout the pedigree. The cross that makes this a balanced pedigree is the Doc Bar cross on Poco Bueno mares.

SIRE LINE

Dual Rey has made a big impact on the cutting industry, and that influence is reflected in the consistent strong performances of his offspring. • Photo by Cam Essick

Dual Rey (Dual Pep x Nurse Rey x Wyoming Doc) is the No. 3 leading sire of cutting horses, according to Equi-Stat, with nearly $39 million in offspring earnings. His leading money-winner is Special Nu Baby ($486,156).

Dual Pep was one of those horses that was shown in the Non-Pro and Open simultaneously with success. He was a finalist at 16 different aged events, often making the finals in both divisions at the same event. His championships include the 1989 Bonanza Derby Open Championship, the 1990 NCHA Summer Spectacular Classic Open and Non-Pro championship, the 1990 Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association Classic Open Championship and the 1991 NCHA Summer Spectacular Challenge Non-Pro Championship.

Dual Pep was sired by Peppy San Badger and his dam was Miss Dual Doc, by Doc’s Remedy. Doc’s Remedy was sired by Doc Bar and out of Teresa Tivio, by Poco Tivio, by Poco Bueno.

Dual Pep has another cross to Doc Bar through Miss Dual Doc, who was out of Miss Brooks Bar, by Doc Bar, and she was out of St Mary’s Dream, by Cannon Ball St John. This gives Miss Dual Doc a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to Doc Bar.

Dual Pep was was shown in the Non-Pro and Open simultaneously and accumulated more than $300,000 in earnings. That versatility was passed on to his get, which have amassed more than $25 million. • Photo by Cam Essick

Nurse Rey (Wyoming Doc x Jay Moss x Rey Jay) counts five championships on her record, including the 1987 Cutting Horse Association of Nebraska 4-Year-Old Futurity Open, the 1987 Kansas 4-Year-Old Futurity, the 1987 Western States Tournament 4-Year-Old Non-Pro, the 1988 Tropicana 4-Year-Old Open and the 1988 Reno’s Western Futurity 5-Year-Old Open. She earned $84,500.

Nurse Rey is the dam of foals that have earnings of more than $674,000, including High Brow Nurse, the 1995 NCHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion. Wyoming Doc was sired by Doc O’Lena (Doc Bar x Poco Lena x Poco Bueno), bringing the pedigree another dose of Doc Bar and a Poco Bueno-line mare. Poco Tivio and Poco Lena are full brother and sister.

DAM LINE

Zacks Fifth Avenue (Zack T Wood x Peppy La Pu x Peppy San Badger) is a multiple aged event finalist, including a win in the 2009 South Point Derby Limited Non-Pro. This mare has an Equi-Stat record of $90,029. She is the dam of horses that have won $68,270. Her leading money-winners are Cattin Downtown ($17,946) and Ace On Fifth ($17,636).

Zack T Wood (Doc Tari x Lintons Lady Doc x Mr Linton) earned $182,423 as an aged event finalist, including a championship in the 1992 NCHA Summer Spectacular Classic/Challenge Open. He was the 1990 American Quarter Horse Association Junior Cutting World Champion.

Zack T Wood is the sire of horses that have won $5.4 million, and his leading money-earner is Nu I Wood ($427,152). Zack T Wood is the broodmare sire of horses that have won $5.1 million, and the leading performer from this set of horses is Special Nu Baby.

Doc Tari (Doc Bar x Puro’s Linda x Puro Tivio) was the 1973 NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Reserve Champion. He earned $16,942 in the arena, and he went on to sire horses that earned $5.2 million. His top money-winner is Taris Catalyst ($326,644). Doc Tari is the broodmare sire of horses that have won $8.4 million, including Imari Tari ($254,915).

The pedigree of Doc Tari brings us back to the Doc Bar/Poco Bueno-line mare, but with a twist. The twist comes from Puro Tivio, a son of Poco Tivio, by Poco Bueno. The dam of Puro Tivio is Red Jane C, by King P-234 and out of Miss Taylor, by Poco Bueno 1. Red Jane C is a full sister to Poco Bueno. This gives Puro Tivio a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to King P-234 and a 2 X 2 to Miss Taylor.

Zack T Wood is like Dual Pep in that he carries another cross to Doc Bar. The dam of Lintons Lady Doc is Jim Bar Yucca, by Jim Bar Araujo. Jim Bar Araujo is sired by Doc Bar, and his dam is Jimmette, by Jimmie Reed.

Peppy La Pu (Peppy San Badger x Leslie Ann Oak x Doc’s Oak) was the winner of $30,949. She won the 1991 Solid Gold 5/6-Year-Old Non-Pro Championship. She was also part of a trio of cutters that helped earn Mitch Farris a top 10 finish in the NCHA Non-Pro in 1990. She is the dam of foals that have earned $343,258, including Teles Again ($121,137).

Leslie Ann Oak, by Doc’s Oak, gives us our fourth cross to a Doc Bar/Poco Bueno-line mare. Doc’s Oak, by Doc Bar, is out of Susie’s Bay, by Poco Tivio. She completes the balance linebreeding in this cross.

When we look at Wanna Dual’s grandsires and granddams (Dual Pep, Nurse Rey, Zack T Wood and Peppy La Pu), we see that each of these horses carries a cross to the Doc Bar/Poco Bueno-line mare cross. This pattern then shows the balance of this bloodline in the pedigree. This tells us the genes contributed by these four grandparents gives the pedigree four avenues for the genes of this cross to pass down to the foal. That is what linebreeding does to recycle the genes into the foal being produced.

One more observation: A review of the pedigree of Special Nu Baby shows she is sired by Dual Rey with his multiple breeding pattern to the Doc Bar/Poco Bueno-line mares. Then we see that Zack T Wood is the sire of Nu I Wood, whose dam was Baby Nu Bar, by Nu Bar. Nu Bar, a full brother to Doc’s Remedy, gives us another example of a balanced pedigree to the Doc Bar/Poco Bueno-line mare cross.

Congratulations to Chubby Turner and Wanna Dual on their well-deserved win at the Augusta Futurity! A bright future may very well be in the cards for this team.
