Broodmares Lead Preferred Breeders Sale Session II

Broodmares were in high demand at the second session of the Western Bloodstock National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity Preferred Breeders Sale, where three of the top four sellers were breeding stock.

Hip No. 4078, Awesome Autumn, was the day’s highest seller when the hammer fell at $200,000 for the 2004 black mare, who was consigned by Glenn and Debbie Drake. The daughter of Smart Little Lena and her embryo by Equi-Stat Elite $16 Million Sire Metallic Cat were sold to Lone Oak Performance Horses LLC.

Out of the great million-dollar producer Autumn Boon (by Dual Pep), Awesome Autumn sold with 2018 ICSI breedings to High Brow Cat and Dual Rey. The earner of $22,725 has already produced 10 money-earners with cumulative records of almost $400,000. Her leading performer is Shrimp Shack Shooter (by Smooth As A Cat), a 2007 gelding with lifetime earnings of $166,626.

Diamond LK Cutting Horses signed the $85,000 ticket on Hip No. 4036, consigned to the sale by Waco Bend Ranch. The second-highest seller, Lahaina Lena, was in foal to Metallic Cat and sold with bookings to popular young stallions Metallic Rebel and Hottish.

Lahaina Lena (by Dual Rey) is the No. 2 earner on Doc O’Lena mare Tap O Lena’s offspring record with more than $100,000 earned. She is topped only by the great Tapt Twice ($285,226, by Dual Pep), who went on to produce the leading cutting mare of all time – Dont Look Twice.

On her own offspring record, Lahaina Lena has one money-earner – 2012 stallion Lahaina Cat (by High Brow Cat), whose lifetime earnings total $27,000-plus. The mare’s first foals were born in 2011.

Hip No. 4093, Quivering Cat, rounded out the top three when he sold to Center Ranch for $77,000. The yearling sorrel colt (High Brow Cat x TM Quiver x Smart Lil Richochet) was consigned by Charles Burger.

Quivering Cat boasts an impressive maternal line, with his dam garnering $155,780 in the show pen and his second dam on the bottom side producing $1.2 million in offspring earnings, including full siblings Equi-Stat Elite $23 Million Sire Smooth As A Cat ($500,038) and Miss Meow ($195,359).

The NCHA Futurity Sales are scheduled through the end of the show, on Dec. 10. For complete coverage of the event, subscribe to Quarter Horse News.
