The 2017 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity and Adequan North American Affiliate Championship Show brought together all the top reining horses for the year. A highlight of this coming together was the Lucas Oil Futurity Level 4 Open finals, where Face The Attitude won with a score of 226.5 and earned $166,656. The win gave her Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Rider, Craig Schmersal, his first NRHA Futurity Open win.

Face The Attitude (Pale Face Dunnit x Miss Lil Addy Tude x Whizard Jac) is owned by Hickory Creek Ranch LLC and bred by KC Performance Horses LLC. She was nominated by Ginger Schmersal.

The pedigree of Face The Attitude brings together a breeding pattern comprised of two stalwarts – one in cutting and one in reining – forming a linebreeding pattern to these two legends.

The sire record for Pale Face Dunnit shows that in three crops of performance age, he is the sire of 52 money-winners that have earned in excess of $760,000 when we include the 2017 NRHA Futurity results. Two of his leading earners are Pale Black Gun ($96,476) and Gold Digging Dunnit ($87,943).

Colonelfourfreckle, the next stallion in this line, introduces us to the first sire in our look at this breeding pattern for Face The Attitude. The sire of Colonelfourfreckle is Colonel Freckles, the 1976 NCHA Futurity Open Champion. Colonel Freckles proved to be a top cutting horse sire, with foal earnings of $4.9 million, including horses like Colonel Lil ($244,145), an NCHA Futurity Open Champion.

The sire record for Colonel Freckles in the reining and reined cow horse shows he has influenced these events through his foals. He is a leading paternal grandsire in both reining ($1.4 million) and reined cow horse ($3 million).

Lena Dun It (Hollywood Dun It x Smokin Hickory Lena x Smart Little Lena) was the 2002 National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Derby Intermediate Open Champion and the 2002 Arizona Reining Horse Association Derby Open and Intermediate Open Champion. She earned nearly $50,000.

The Equi-Stat produce record for Lena Dun It reflects six money-earners after the 2017 Futurity, including Lena Dun Hit It Out ($27,467), the 2011 California Reining Challenge Derby Non-Pro Reserve Champion, and FS Lenas Starlight ($26,965), the 2011 North Central Extravaganza Futurity Non-Pro Reserve Champion.

Hollywood Dun It was the 1987 NRHA Derby Open Champion, the 1987 NRHA Super Stakes Open Champion and 1986 NRHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion. He is an Equi-Stat Elite $7 Million Sire and his leading money-winner is Hollywoodstinseltown ($178,156).

Hollywood Dun It, by Hollywood Jac 86 (Easter King x Miss Hollywood x Hollywood Gold) is the second stallion in our look at this breeding pattern for Face The Attitude. Hollywood Jac 86 was the 1974 and 1975 NRHA Non-Pro World Champion. Hollywood Jac 86 is the first stallion to reach the million-dollar milestone in the NRHA. His sire earnings recorded in Equi-Stat are more than $1.6 million, and his leading money-winner is Mr Melody Jac ($112,239). Hollywood Jac 86 is also an all-time leading paternal grandsire sire, with $15 million won, and maternal grandsire, with more than $4.6 million.

DAM LINE

Miss Lil Addy Tude (Whizard Jac x Miss Col Otoe x Colonel Four Runner) was a 2011 Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) World Reining Finals and Ariat Tulsa Reining Classic CRI Champion. She earned $116,312 in her career.

Equi-Stat records show she has five money-earners of greater than $253,000, and her second-leading money-winner is Boomer With Attitude ($19,085). She is the dam of two more money-earners that are full sisters to Face The Attitude. They are Dunnit With Attytude ($9,774) and Dunnit With Attitude ($3,503).

Whizard Jac (Topsail Whiz x Bees Honey Jac x Hollywood Jac 86) was the 1996 NRHA Futurity Open Champion. He is an Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Sire. His leading money-winner is Sail On Top Whizard ($278,042), with Miss Lil Addy Tude as his No. 2 performer. Whizard Jac is the broodmare sire of horses with earnings of $729,778, topped by The Wizster ($206,131).

Topsail Whiz (Topsail Cody x Jeanie Whiz Bar x Cee Red) needs no introduction, as he is the all-time leading sire of reining horse performers, with sire earnings in excess of $12 million. His leading money-winners include The Great Whiz ($273,969) and Easy Otie Whiz ($233,611).

Schmersal also rode Face The Attitude’s dam, Miss Lil Addy Tude, who went on to accumulate $116,312 in her career. • Photo by Waltenberry

Bees Honey Jac earned $27,986 as a finalist in the 1991 NRHA Futurity Open and the 1992 NRHA Derby Open. She is the dam of horses that have won $238,303. Her money-winners include Whizota ($38,471). She is also the dam of Made Whiz Honey, who has earned 37.5 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) performance points.

Through Bees Honey Jac we see the second appearance of Hollywood Jac 86 in the pedigree of Face The Attitude. This gives his pedigree a breeding pattern of 4 X 4 to Hollywood Jac 86.

Miss Col Otoe (Colonel Four Runner x Dixie Whizotoe x Aloto Whizotoe) was an NRHA money-winner and an AQHA earner of 2 points. She is the dam of only two foals, and Miss Lil Addy Tude her only money-earner.

Colonel Four Runner is a son of Colonel Freckles. This gives the pedigree of Face The Attitude his second cross to Colonel Freckles with a 4 X 4 breeding pattern.

The mating of horses that carry the blood of Colonel Freckles and Hollywood Jac 86 is highlighted by the magic cross of Colonels Smoking Gun and Hollywood Dun It. We see that cross in Pale Face Dunnit. The Dec. 15, 2016, issue of Quarter Horse News indicated this is the No. 1 magic cross, with winners of nearly $2 million.

When we look at the linebreeding to Colonel Freckles and Hollywood Jac 86 in Face The Attitude, we see a different way of using this cross. By using this breeding pattern, we enable the genes for this magic cross to come down into the foal from both sides of the pedigree, and this enhances the chance of repeating the success of that cross.
