Chic With Guns & Son Top NRHA/Markel Futurity Marketplace Sale

The first session of the three-day National Reining Horse Association/Markel Futurity Sales – the Marketplace Sale – saw many yearlings and broodmares pass through the sale ring, but Chic With Guns topped them all as the highest seller. Her 2016 colt brought the highest price among yearlings.

Chic With Guns, a 2008 gray mare (Smart Chic Olena x Playguns Smoking x Playgun) bred by Jim Babcock, sold for $35,000 to Laurie Dale. Bred to Wimpys Little Step, the broodmare was consigned by Matt Flarida, agent for Jennifer Kersey.

With more than $2,600 in lifetime earnings, Chic With Guns is a full sister to NRHA European Derby Co-Reserve Champion Lil Smokeing Gun ($39,857) and a half-sister to 2008 stallion Misters Smokin Gun (by Mister Dual Pep), whose lifetime earnings total nearly $20,000.

Chic With Guns is the dam of four offspring, the oldest a 2014 double-registered filly by Colonels Smoking Gun (Gunner). Her two most recent foals – from 2016 and 2017 – are full siblings to the foal in utero. That 2016 colt – Gunning For Wimpy – was the highest-selling yearling in the Marketplace Sale.

Gunning For Wimpy, also sold by Kersey with Pro Fit Equine as the agent, brought a final bid of $32,000, falling a mere $3,000 short of his dam’s price. The gray colt was purchased by Bob and Arlene Santagata, of Santa Hill Ranch in Campbell Hall, New York.

The NRHA/Markel Futurity Sales continue through Saturday, Dec. 2. For complete coverage of the sale, subscribe to Quarter Horse News.
