When a horse wins a go-round to qualify for the finals of an event, it gives them momentum. The goal is to have that momentum carry over into the finals. So, when Chex For Nite won the Southwest Reining Horse Association (SWRHA) Futurity Level 4 Open, he made good use of the momentum from his go-round win. Piloted by Franco Bertolani for Cardinal Hill Training Center, he got the Championship with a score of 223, worth $15,788.

Chex For Nite (Gunners Special Nite x Dun It For Chex x Hollywood Dun It) was bred by Oldenburg Farm LLC, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was purchased as a weanling by Cardinal Hill Training Center, of Aubrey, Texas.

The first thing we see when we look at the pedigree of Chex For Nite is that it is highlighted by some very famous reining bloodlines. This pedigree also shows a breeding pattern designed to enhance the potential for hybrid vigor in the horse produced. Hybrid vigor is the genetic phenomenon that occurs when two unrelated horses are mated and produce good foals. Geneticists have found that hybrid vigor is a key to breed improvement.

SIRE LINE

Gunners Special Nite was the Open Reserve Champion and Intermediate Open Champion at the 2007 NRHA Futurity, and he went on to earn two gold medals at the World Equestrian Games, but his real impact has been made in the breeding shed. • Photo by John Brasseaux

Gunners Special Nite (Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner] x Mifs Doll x Mifillena) started early in his career with a Reserve Championship in the 2007 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Open and the 2007 NRHA Futurity Intermediate Open Championship. He would go on to be a World Equestrian Games double gold medalist and the winner of $222,974 in his career.

The sire record for Gunners Special Nite shows that he is an Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Sire with offspring earnings of $1.1 million. His leading money-winners are Modern Gun ($65,873), Hollywood Nites ($56,401), Wham Bam Gunner Man ($52,139) and Sunglasses At Nite ($50,404).

Gunner was the 1996 NRHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion, the 1996 American Paint Horse Association Junior Reining World Champion and a 2001 United States Equestrian Federation Reining Champion. He earned $177,386.

The pedigree of Gunner (Colonelfourfreckle x Katie Gun x John Gun) brings us to our first ingredient in our look at the potential for hybrid vigor in the pedigree of Chex For Nite. Colonelfourfreckle is sired by Colonel Freckles (Jewel’s Leo Bars x Christy Jay x Rey Jay) and his dam is Miss Solano, by Doc’s Solano (Doc Bar x Susie’s Bay x Poco Tivio). The cross of Colonel Freckles/Doc’s Solano is the first step in this hybrid vigor breeding pattern.

Mifs Doll ($25,723) was the 2002 Gordyville Breeders Cup Derby Open Champion. She is the dam of foals that have Equi-Stat records of $385,371, including: Gunnerlicious ($52,549), winner of the 2014 Belgium 3/4-Year-Old Open; Dolled Up Gunner ($44,809), the 2008 North Central Reining Horse Association Futurity Non-Pro Champion; Gunnersspecialsister ($31,274); and Gunners Doll ($21,324), the 2007 Carolina Classic Derby Open Reserve Champion. These four horses are a full brother and full sisters to Gunners Special Nite.

The pedigree of Mifs Doll (Mifillena x Sidewinders Doll x Docs Sidewinder) brings us back to our look at a hybrid vigor breeding pattern. Mifillena (Smart Little Lena x Miss Freckles Last x Colonel Freckles) was the 1994 NRHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion and earned more than $80,000. He is the sire of horses with lifetime earnings of $315,571. His leading money-winner is Mifillenium ($45,806).

Mifillena is the broodmare sire of horses that have Equi-Stat records of $650,070. As a broodmare sire, his leading money-winner is Gunners Special Nite. Miss Freckles Last brings another cross to Colonel Freckles into the pedigree. This gives Gunners Special Nite a breeding pattern of 3 X 4 to Colonel Freckles.

Sidewinders Doll was an NRHA money-earner, and she is the dam of foals with earnings of $67,531. Her leading money-winner is Cherees Hollywinder ($30,466). Her sire, Docs Sidewinder (Doc’s Solano x Trudi Command x Blue Command), gives the pedigree of Gunners Special Nite his second cross to Doc’s Solano. This also shows us that the pedigree of Gunners Special Nite is linebred to the Colonel Freckles/Doc’s Solano cross, and this is a key to our hybrid vigor breeding pattern.

HYBRID VIGOR

Hybrid vigor is defined as the genetic phenomenon that occurs when two unrelated individuals are mated, producing outstanding foals. A great example of hybrid vigor comes from the mating of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. The greatest example for this breeding pattern is the Thoroughbred stallion Three Bars on Quarter Horse mares.

The first way to get hybrid vigor comes when two unrelated inbred individuals are mated. The next pattern we will see for hybrid vigor is an inbred individual mated with an individual that carries no inbreeding close up in the pedigree.

Gunners Special Nite is inbred or double-bred to the Colonel Freckles/Doc’s Solano cross. When we look at the pedigree of Dun It For Chex, we see there are no duplication of ancestors in her four-generation pedigree. This is the hybrid vigor breeding pattern that produced Chex For Nite, the 2017 SWRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion.
