Carol Ward Takes Derby Unlimited Amateur in Fort Worth

Derby Amateur

The Derby Amateur finals saw 21 horse and rider combinations pass through the cutting pen, and the winner came from the first of two sets. Sue Christensen walked to the herd with confidence on Auspicious Ruby Cat, and they put together a solid 219 for the Championship.

The title was worth $5,138, which pushed Christensen to an Equi-Stat record of nearly $95,000. The John Paul McGraw-bred mare (Auspicious Cat x Ruby Mate x Smart Mate) now boasts lifetime earnings of $12,689.

Beyond winning a nice paycheck, Christensen was thrilled she was able to put together such a solid run on her mare.

“I didn’t expect to win it,” Christensen said. “But I knew my horse was of that caliber, and I am just thrilled.”

As the final draw, Ryan Smith marked a 215 on Suen Or Lator (Boon Too Suen x Little Lena Kate x Smart Little Lena) for the Reserve Championship, worth $4,936.
