In the Blood: Cinca Im Hot

Cinca Im Hot marked her emergence into the derby division with a win in the Breeder’s Invitational Derby Open at the Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She entered the arena the first time in the 2016 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity Open, placing 16th in the finals. Shortly after that, she encountered a foot injury and was unable to compete until the Breeder’s Invitational.

The wait was worthwhile, as Cinca Im Hot and Jesse Lennox, the newest Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Rider, marked a 225, earning $70,369. This win put the mare’s earnings over the $100,000 mark in two contests for owner Rocking P Ranch LLC.

Cinca Im Hot (Spots Hot x Cinca De Maya x Dual Rey) was bred in Oklahoma by Paul Dean’s Cross Timbers Cutting Horses LLC. A look at Cinca Im Hot returns to a pedigree that has been examined in In the Blood before, but with a different pedigree design. Both showcase how the “magic cross” influences pedigrees in the Western performance horse industry.

Sire Line

Spots Hot made headlines at the 2016 NCHA Futurity Sales when he was sold by Sunrise Ranch to Bobby Patton’s Rocking P Ranch. The next day, he added a win to his sire record when his daughter Second Spot won the NCHA Futurity Open under Matt Gaines.

It seems Spots Hot has been making headlines from the first time he entered the arena. He won the 2004 NCHA Futurity Open Championship, and went on to win five Open and Non-Pro events including the 2005 South Point Derby Open and 2007 Abilene Spectacular Classic Non-Pro. Spots Hot retired with earnings of $529,439.

Spots Hot’s sire record shows that his foals have earned more than $4 million. They include Hottish ($301,200), a winner of a number of aged events including the 2012 Breeder’s Invitational Derby Open, and 2010 NCHA Summer Spectacular Derby Open Champion Harley ($186,821).

Spots Hot is sired by Chula Dual (Dual Pep x Smart Fancy Lena x Smart Little Lena), who was the 1999 Polo Ranch 4-Year-Old Open Champion. Chula Dual earned $171,134 and has sired earners of more than $1.9 million, including his second-leading money-winner, Chulas Merada ($151,031).

The dam of Spots Hot is Sweet Shorty Lena (Shorty Lena x Quixotes R Sugar x Son O Sugar), an earner of $114,276 who was the 2000 Steamboat Springs Non-Pro Reserve Champion. As an Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Dam, Sweet Shorty Lena’s foals include Innovation Time ($172,258) and His Reyflection ($130,322).

Cinca De Maya ($107,590) was the 2012 Abilene Spectacular Derby Open Reserve Champion when ridden by Wes Galyean for owner Paul Dean. She was also a finalist at events like the NCHA Super Stakes and the Breeder’s Invitational. Cinca Im Hot is her only registered foal. Cinca De Maya is also now owned by Rocking P Ranch.

Cinca De Maya’s sire, Dual Rey (Dual Pep x Nurse Rey x Wyoming Doc), is the No. 3 all-time leading sire of cutting horses with more than $30 million in get earnings. Dual Rey, being by Dual Pep, gives Cinca Im Hot a breeding pattern of 3 X 3 to Dual Pep.

Cinca De Maya’s dam, Highbrow Supercat (High Brow Cat x Holly Dolly Too x Colonel Freckles), was the 2005 NCHA Futurity Open Champion under Tommy Marvin. She earned $366,230 for Dean, and has produced foals with Equi-Stat records of $1,199,601. Three of her 17 money-earners are $100,000-plus winners, including Lil Rattler ($328,368) and Button Down Supercat ($263,565).

Holly Dolly Too (Colonel Freckles x Holly Commander x Commander King) is the dam of Highbrow Supercat. She won the 1990 Bluebonnet Stakes Non-Pro and earned $17,616 in her career. Holly Dolly Too is the dam of horses with Equi-Stat records of $557,836, including Cats Colonel ($112,741).

Pedigree Patterns

The pedigree of Cinca De Maya represents the different pedigree design mentioned earlier in the comparison of the pedigrees of Cinca Im Hot and Second Spot. Both mares are sired by Spots Hot, with Second Spot being out of Reycy Moon by Cats Moonshine (High Brow Cat x Genuine Moonshine x Genuine Doc). The dam of Reycy Moon, is Twice As Reycy (Dual Rey x Rey Lena Girl x Smart Little Lena). This reverses the position of High Brow Cat and Dual Rey in the pedigree of Cinca Im Hot compared to Second Spot. We also see Second Spot has a breeding pattern of 3 X 4 to Dual Pep.

The pedigrees of the dams of Cinca Im Hot and Second Spot represent two different pedigree patterns for the magic cross of High Brow Cat and Dual Rey. The Dec. 15, 2016, issue of Quarter Horse News included the top 25 magic crosses in the cutting horse industry from Jan. 1, 2011, to June 30, 2016, and High Brow Cat and Dual Rey were prominent players. The No. 1 cross was Dual Rey on daughters of High Brow Cat. This cross produced the winners of $3,541,677, with 97 money-earners averaging $36,512. The No. 17 cross was High Brow Cat on Dual Rey mares, with 33 money-earners averaging $33,652 and totaling $1,110,501.

Cinca Im Hot represents the cross of Spots Hot on Dual Rey mares, which has produced earners of $229,192 with six money-winners that average $38,193. Second Spot represents the magic cross of Spots Hot on High Brow Cat mares. This was Spots Hot’s No. 1 cross, with earnings of $788,849 banked by 39 money-earners for average earnings of $20,227.

The Breeder’s Invitational set Cinca Im Hot back on the road to success as a cutter. A look at her pedigree reinforces the role of the magic cross as a tool in horse breeding – a tool that can have different designs and still be successful.
