Veteran Trainers

At the 1995 Oregon Quarter Horse Association Summer Classic and Great Northwest Futurities in Central Point, Oregon, veteran all-around trainer Bob Avila, of Temecula, California, rode two Smart Little Lena offspring to a tie for the Bruce Gilchrist Memorial Open Reining Championship. One of those was Smart Peach (out of Sans Peach x Sanctuary), who was joined in a winner’s picture by Lean With Me (out of Chexy Lady x King Fritz), ridden by Todd Bergen, Avila’s assistant trainer at the time. Bergen rode Lean With Me to win the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby Open earlier in the summer.

Avila demonstrated his versatility during the weekend as he claimed two other championship titles at the show; he won the 3-Year-Old Open Western Pleasure riding Im Busy Crusin (Zippos Old Gold x Zee Zip Vester x Zee Zee Zip) and the Team Roping Heeling on Scotch Is In (Scotch Bar Time x Penelope Petite x Mr Sangaree). An Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Rider and multiple American Quarter Horse Association World Championship rider, Avila won the 1994 NRHA Futurity riding Lenas Wright On (Smart Little Lena x Slide Me Again x Isle Breeze). He has won the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity three times – in 1988 riding Smart Little Calboy (Smart Little Lena x Miss Cal Sen x Cal Bar); in 1999 riding Smart Zanolena (Smart Chic Olena x Zanee Lynx x Doc’s Lynx); and in 2003 riding Chics Magic Potion (Smart Chic Olena x Remedys Magic Potion x Remedys Reply).

Bergen, now an Equi-Stat Elite $4 Million Rider who trains out of his Eagle Point, Oregon, facility, won the 1994 NRHA Futurity Limited Open on Good Draw (Doc O’Lena x Candis Chex Too x Bueno Chex Too) and the NRHA Futurity Open twice – in 1995 riding Todaysmyluckyday (Doc O’Lena x Doc Alice x Doc’s Sug), and in 1998 riding Chic Please (Smart Chic Olena x San O Lenita x Tenino San). He has also won the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open twice – in 2001 riding Boonlight Dancer (Peptoboonsmal x Little Dancer Lena x Smart Little Lena), and in 2011 riding Shiners Dun Juan (Smart Shiner x Cremes Chic Olena x Smart Chic Olena).
