All of the 50 horses cataloged in the Select Yearling Sale and Gala came from proven maternal families, resulting in pages full of black type. The quality of the stock that walked through the Round-Up Inn at the Will Rogers Memorial Center on the evening of Dec. 6 matched the printed pedigrees, offering discerning buyers an elite set of young prospects on which to bid. And bid they did. By the end of the night, prices exceeded six figures on several occasions and peaked at $200,000 with Hip No. 10, Smooth Walkin Style.
Consigned by Double Dove Ranch, Smooth Walkin Style is by Smooth As A Cat and out of Stylish Play Lena, by Docs Stylish Oak. This marks the fourth year in a row – every year since the Select Yearling Sale and Gala’s inception in 2013 – that Smooth As A Cat has sired the highest seller.
Stylish Play Lena is one of the cutting industry’s top dams with offspring earnings approaching $1.5 million. Of her 21 foals of performance age, 15 are money-earners, including three by Smooth As A Cat. Those full siblings to Smooth Walkin Style include 2015 NCHA Horse of the Year Smooth Talking Style ($300,388). Stylish Play Lena has also produced Pepto Boom ($308,369, by Peptoboonsmal), Hottish ($301,843, by Spots Hot), Halreycious ($227,459, by Dual Rey) and Reydiculous ($149,054, by Dual Rey).
As Smooth Walkin Style exited the sale ring, Misty Reyn entered. The Dual Rey filly was consigned by Arcese and Oswood, and sold for $150,000. Misty Reyn’s dam, Cat Mist, earned $70,261 in the arena and has put together an offspring record of more than $500,000. Her foals include: ARC Catty Dual (by Dual Pep), an earner of $168,762 and the dam of One Catty Cupid ($130,172) and CR One Time Catty ($22,595); NCHA Amateur Co-World Champion One Red Mist ($114,425, by One Time Pepto); and ARC Purr D Boons Mal ($107,578, by Peptoboonsmal).
