In the Money: NRHA Futurity Open Finalists

IntheMoney PSMegaShineChic 15SPPS Mega Shine Chic brought $280,000 at the 2015 NRHA/Markel Insurance Futurity Prospect Sale. • Photo by Stacy PigottOn Saturday, Dec. 3, all eyes in the reining world will be focused on Oklahoma City, where the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Open finals will begin at noon with Section 1, immediately followed by Section 2 and the Lucas Oil Level 4 Open Futurity finals. The road to the Futurity can be long and arduous, with hopefuls hailing from all over the United States and, indeed, the world. The paths of some horses led them through various sale rings, as one-third of the Level 4 Open finalists are previous sale horses.

After two go-rounds, Luckie Moonstone and Shawn Flarida’s 445 composite topped the list of 30 Level 4 Open finalists. They marked a 221.5 in the first go and a 223.5 their second run in the Jim Norick Arena.

Oso Horses, of Wayne, Oklahoma, had the winning $10,000 bid that day. Less than four months later, they sold Luckie Moonstone privately to Jason Dobrinski, of Factoryville, Pennsylvania, who now finds himself with a finalist in this year’s premier event for 3-year-olds. Luckie Moonstone and Flarida drew deep in the finals – 26 out of 30 – ensuring an exciting finals from beginning to end.

With Craig Schmersal in the saddle, Pale Conquistador turned in go-round scores of 220.5 and 219.5 for a 440 composite that easily secured his spot in the NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open finals. Pale Conquistador was bred by the B.S. Syndicate, which consigned the stallion to the 2014 Legacy Consignment Sale. Eric Unger signed the ticket that day, paying $9,500 for the stallion. Schmersal, who rode and stands Pale Conquistador’s sire, Pale Face Funnit, will show Pale Conquistador from draw No. 8 in the NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open finals.

While those two horses could be considered relative bargains, there is one horse whose finalist berth has justified his six-figure purchase price. PS Mega Shine Chic made headlines last year as the highest seller in the NRHA/Markel Insurance Futurity Prospect Sale when Bradley and Amanda Kelly paid $280,000 for the palomino stallion.

PS Mega Shine Chic’s sale was a successful pinhook for the Houde and Tremblay Partnership, which bought the horse as a yearling for $5,300 at the NRHA/Markel Insurance Marketplace Sale before turning him around as a 2-year-old for more than 50 times his original purchase price. PS Mega Shine Chic and Dany Tremblay will compete from draw five in the finals.
