In the Money: Grandsires at the Sales

IntheMoney 01 MetallicBabeMetallic Babe sold for $55,000. • Photo by Stacy PigottMore yearlings sold at the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales than any other age group, as 131 of the 195 horses through the ring were born in 2015. High Brow Cat played a major role in the pedigrees of nearly half of those yearlings, as either their paternal or maternal grandsire.

Through all sessions, 42 yearlings at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales were sired by sons of High Brow Cat. That’s 32 percent of the yearlings at the sale. They represented 12 different sires: Bet Hesa Cat, Black Catamounts Rey, Cat Ichi, Cats Full Moon, Cats Merada, Cats Moonshine, Hydrive Cat, Metallic Cat, Smooth As A Cat, Thomas E Hughes, Tomcat Chex and WR This Cats Smart.

The most expensive yearling by a son of High Brow Cat was also the sale’s highest-selling yearling, Metallic Babe. The colt, born Feb. 18, 2015, is by Metallic Cat and out of Shes A Stylish Babe, by Docs Stylish Oak. Jim and Linda Schrack bought Metallic Babe for $55,000 from consignor Rick Ford, agent for Doug Carpenter.

Yearlings sired by sons of High Brow Cat averaged $13,269, excluding repurchases.

As a paternal grandsire, Peptoboonsmal was represented by the second-highest number of yearlings. Those 15 yearlings were by three different stallions — One Time Pepto, Once In A Blu Boon and Redneck Pepto.

Jake Telford consigned One Happy Time (One Time Pepto x Vandas Spark x Shining Spark), who was purchased by Bob Schwenkfelder.

The only other paternal grandsire with more than 10 yearlings at the sales was Dual Rey, who saw 11 yearlings go through the ring for an average of $11,089, excluding repurchases. Those 11 yearlings were by Dual Smart Rey, Dual R Smokin, Little Dulces Rey and Reys Dual Badger.

Two horses, Reys Senorita and Smoketta Cat, tied with sale prices of $23,000. Gardiner Quarter Horses consigned Reys Senorita, who is by Reys Dual Badger and out of Shiney Senorita, by Shining Spark. The Feb. 24, 2015, filly was purchased by Gretchen Lemoine. Smoketta Cat (Dual R Smokin x Fletchetta Cat x High Brow Cat) was consigned by Johanna Watson and bought by Orlando Gonzalez.

Smoketta Cat was one of 14 yearlings that had High Brow Cat as a maternal grandsire. Yearlings out of daughters of High Brow Cat averaged $13,575, with Pepper Me One Time garnering the top price of $27,500. Cinder Lakes Ranch, Agent, consigned Pepper Me One Time (One Time Pepto x Peppers Stylish Cat x High Brow Cat), who sold to Newt White.

Combining the number of yearlings by sons of and out of daughters of High Brow Cat resulted in 43 percent of the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Sale yearlings with High Brow Cat as a grandsire.

The only other maternal grandsire to be represented by more than 10 yearlings at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales was Shining Spark. Fourteen yearlings out of 12 different daughters of Shining Spark averaged $17,568, excluding repurchases. One Happy Time topped that list.
