Bobs Smart Badger and Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Rider Russ Westfall have been busy this fall earning four West Coast futurity championships. The first two wins came in the El Rancho Futurity Open and Gelding Open in Rancho Murieta, California. The next championships came in Las Vegas, when they won the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA)/Holy Cow Performance Horses Futurity Open and Gelding Open. The 2013 gelding started his career as an Open finalist at the West Texas Futurity before he annexed four wins for an Equi-Stat record of more than $40,000 for owners George and Charlene Lane.

Bobs Smart Badger was bred by Glade Knight and foaled on his Slate River Ranch. His sire is Reys Dual Badger ($313,563), the 2006 National Cutting Horse Association Horse of the Year. Reys Dual Badger, owned by S & S Partners, has an Equi-Stat sire record that exceeds $3 million. His foals include Moms Dual N Badger ($170,089) and Duals For Amanda ($156,446). He is also the sire of NCHA Non-Pro Horse of the Year Dual With Style ($133,676) and Badgers Perscription ($131,566), both top mounts for Kelle Earnheart.

Reys Dual Badger is sired by No. 3 all-time leading cutting sire Dual Rey, by Dual Pep. Dual Pep is sired by Peppy San Badger and out of Miss Dual Doc, by Doc’s Remedy (Doc Bar x Teresa Tivio x Poco Tivio). The dam of Dual Rey is Nurse Rey (Wyoming Doc x Jay Moss x Rey Jay).

Lipshy is the dam of Reys Dual Badger. She is an NCHA money-earner and the dam of foals with Equi-Stat records totaling more than $378,695. Her offspring include DMAC Reyon ($34,474) and DS Family Jewels ($26,228).

Haidas Little Pep ($425,174) is the sire of Lipshy. He is by Peppy San Badger. His dam is Doc’s Haida (Doc Bar x Teresa Tivio x Poco Tivio). Doc’s Haida is a full sister to Doc’s Remedy. This makes Dual Pep and Haidas Little Pep three-quarter brothers in blood, as both are by Peppy San Badger and one of them is out of a daughter of Doc Bar and Teresa Tivio while the other is out of a daughter of Doc’s Remedy, a son of Doc Bar and Teresa Tivio.

Lipshy is out of Herezalil Remedy, by Doc’s Remedy, giving this pedigree another cross to Doc’s Remedy. This shows that the pedigree of Reys Dual Badger is highly influenced by not only the closely related Dual Pep and Haidas Little Pep, but also by Doc’s Remedy and Doc’s Haida as two more collateral relatives. Collateral relatives are full brothers or sisters, as well as three-quarter brothers or sisters, that appear in the same pedigree.

The Doc Bar/Teresa Tivio Dynasty

When Arnold Dolcini entered the breeding business, he went to the court of Doc Bar with his Poco Tivio mare Teresa Tivio. The result was a mare named Fizzabar. Fizzabar went on to be an NCHA Hall of Fame mare and a noted reined cow horse.

She was just the beginning, as this cross also produced Cattabar, Cuttabar, Cal Bar, Cran Bar, Nu Bar, Doc’s Haida, Boon Bar, Doc’s Remedy and Doc Bar Gem. Now, through horses like Doc’s Haida and Doc’s Remedy in the pedigree of Reys Dual Badger, the benefits of collateral linebreeding to this great cross are apparent. It is a collateral cross seen a great deal in today’s cutting horses.

The dam of Bobs Smart Badger is Bobs Smart Chance ($219,890), an aged-event mare shown in the Open by John Mitchell, and in the Non-Pro and Amateur by Glade Knight. Her biggest payday was a third-place finish in the 1998 NCHA Futurity Open with Mitchell. Knight rode the mare to several titles including a Reserve Championship in the 2001 NCHA Super Stakes Classic/Challenge Amateur. Bobs Smart Chance is the dam of foals that have earnings of $247,407 recorded in Equi-Stat. Her foals include That Sly Chance ($69,109) and Oaks Smart Chance ($60,353).

The sire of Bobs Smart Chance is Bob Acre Doc ($418,926) by Son Ofa Doc (Doc Bar X Jazzy Socks X Royal King). The dam of Bob Acre Doc is Sapp’s Sandy, by Sapp Head. Sapp Head was out of Queen Mitzy. Queen Mitzy is the granddam of Doc N Missy, a National Reined Cow Horse Association Hall of Fame member and dam of the prominent sire Miss N Cash (by Dash For Cash).

Dox Smart Chance ($53,217) is the dam of Bobs Smart Chance. Equi-Stat’s produce record for this mare shows that her foals have earned $385,069. The leading money-winner is Bobs Smart Chance. She was followed by Missed Reward ($93,318) and Missed Your Chance ($47,229), both of which are by Miss N Cash.

Dox Smart Chance (Doc O’Lena x Smart Peppy x Peppy San) is a full sister to Smart Little Lena ($743,275). The dam of Smart Peppy is Royal Smart, by Royal King. Smart Peppy is the dam of foals that have earned more than $1.1 million. Some of the other money-winners from this mare include Smart Peppy Doc ($120,537), Oh How Smart ($119,779) and Ill Be Smart ($77,739), all by Doc O’Lena.

Bobs Smart Badger has four futurity titles in the books and will head to next year’s 4-year-old derbies in hopes of keeping the winning streak alive.
