Cats Merada 2-Year-Old Tops First Day of NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Sales

quejanaisacatQuejanaisacat and Nick Dowers drew cheers from the crowd after the bidding stopped at $115,000.Quejanaisacat fetched the highest bid of $115,000 on the first of two days of sales at the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, Nevada, on Sept. 30. A total of 107 horses were sold through three sessions, with the highest prices posted during the Select 2-Year-Old Sale.

Consigned by Charles Mills, Quejanisacat is by Cats Merada and out of the Quejanaisalena mare AR Powderfulena, who is a half-sister to Crown On The Rox ($37,636 in cutting, by Ill Be Smart). Quejanaisacat’s second dam is Powderful, who won the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association Derby Open on the way to $68,213 in career earnings.

Nick Dowers showed Quejanaisacat on cattle during the sale, then demonstrated the colt’s dry work in the sale arena. Dowers won the NRCHA Hackamore Classic Open on Raise A Smart Cat and tied for second on Smooth Bellingrath, and will show High Stressin Cat in the Snaffle Bit Futurity Open finals on Saturday night.

jose-jalapenoTrained by Justin Lawrence, Jose Jalapeno was the second-highest seller at $75,000.The second-highest seller was Jose Jalapeno, who was consigned by Justin and Kelsie Lawrence and sold for $75,000. The Lawrences successfully pinhooked the colt, tagging him as a yearling for $20,000 at the 2015 NCHA Futurity Preferred Breeders Sale Session 1, where he was consigned by J Five Horse Ranch Management.

J Five Horse Ranch Management bred Jose Jalapeno and stands his sire, Dual R Smokin. Jose Jalapeno is out of the Dual Pep mare Joses Dually, an earner of $103,000 and top 10 Open finalist at the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity and Derby. Joses Dually is the dam of earners of $846,910, including Pale Face Jose ($260,027, by CD Olena) and MH San Tules Dually ($331,846, by San Tule Freckles), who is the dam of $352,857-earner Bamacat.

bet-he-sparksThe hammer fell at $74,000 for 2014 colt Bet He Sparks.The bidding stopped at $74,000 for Bet He Sparks, a 2014 colt by NCHA Open World Champion Bet Hesa Cat and out of NRCHA Open Two-Rein World Champion Sparking Train, by Shining Spark. Louis Schuette consigned Bet He Sparks, who is a half-brother to Delighting Express ($4,876, by CD Lights).

During the Classic Yearling and Broodmare Sale, two broodmares sold in the mid-$30,000s – High Brow Gal for $37,000 and Shezasmartlooknpepto for $34,500.

Judy Siebel’s Bitterroot Springs Ranch, of Stevensville, Montana, consigned High Brow Gal (High Brow Cat x Dual Citizen x Dual Pep), a 2006 mare who sold in foal to Smart Boons. High Brow Gal earned $13,849 as a cutting horse, and she is a half-sister to three other money-earners, all by Quejanaisalena.

Shezasmartlooknpepto was consigned by Neidhart Cutting Horses, of Weatherford, Texas. The 2009 Peptoboonsmal mare is out of The Smart Look, the No. 3 all-time leading dam of cutting money-earners. Bred by Strawn Valley Ranch, Shezasmartlooknpepto sold at the ranch’s 2013 dispersal sale for $24,000, and then she sold again in 2014 for $26,000. Her oldest foal is a 2-year-old this year.

Overall, for all three sessions, horses through the ring averaged $14,216, including repurchases. The median price, including repurchases, was $8,625. The Classic Yearling and Broodmare Sale averaged $7,251 with a median price of $5,250, including repurchases. The Select 2-Year-Old Sale averaged $22,562 with a median price of $15,000, including repurchases. And the Performance Horse Sale averaged $14,617 with a $15,000 median, including repurchases.
