In the Money: High Roller Finalists

Seventeen horses (including ties) took home money in the Tamarack Ranch Futurity Level 4 Open finals at the High Roller Reining Classic on Sept. 15 in Las Vegas. Of those money-earners, four were sale horses in 2014 and all could now be considered relative bargains. Only one of the four horses was a repurchase at $8,000, while the other three sold for prices ranging from $9,000 to $37,000.

The highest-finishing horse was Hey Joe, who marked a 220 under Jason Vanlandingham to tie for third in the Futurity Level 4 Open. The 2013 stallion (Smart Spook x Best Stop x Custom Crome) earned $6,216 for owner Jason Anderson, of Chicago, Illinois. Anderson wasn’t the buyer when Hey Joe went through the 2014 NRHA Markel Insurance Select Yearling Sale, though. It was 4V Livestock LLC that tagged the Wagman Ranch-consigned colt for $15,000.

Finishing 1 point behind Hey Joe and tying for sixth was Smart Twinkeltown (Hollywoodstinseltown x Smartys Little Jewel x Smart And Chromed), who was ridden by Ruben Vandorp for owner Shanda Guard, of Kaufman, Texas. Smart Twinkeltown’s score of 219 also finished third in Level 3 and took the Level 2 Open Championship. The stallion’s total show earnings of $12,638 surpassed the $9,000 Ruggiero Musacci paid for the red dun stallion at the 2014 Legacy Consignment Sale when he bought him from breeders Todd and Catherine Wright.

Whizkey Rock N Roll (Whizkey N Diamonds x Snip O Chex x Nu Chex To Cash) garnered the highest sale price of any of the four money-earning Futurity Level 4 Open finalists at the High Roller. At the 2014 NRHA Markel Insurance Select Yearling Sale, he sold for $37,000 to Rhodes River Ranch after being consigned by Cinder Lakes Ranch. In Las Vegas, Martin Muehlstaetter piloted the stallion to a score of 218.5 that tied for 10th in the Level 4 Open and fourth in Level 3. Those two placings sent home $5,612 to owner Farniente Corp.

Spooky Whiz (Spooks Gotta Whiz x Myo Starlight x Paddys Irish Whiskey), who also tied for 10th under Andrea Fappani, was consigned to the 2014 NRHA Markel Insurance Marketplace Sale by breeders Spence and Kristin Bell, who repurchased the stallion for $8,000. Rancho Oso Rio LLC now owns Spooky Whiz, who earned $1,912 in the finals.
