Dual Smart Rey ($330,436) had a banner year in 2006 with wins in the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Super Stakes Open and Bonanza 4-Year-Old Open, and an American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Junior Cutting World Championship. Dual Smart Rey is an Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Sire whose get include NCHA Futurity Open Champion Dual Smart Kitty ($317,758) and Glitter Done, who has secured three consecutive Open wins in Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting events this year.

Dual Rey, the sire of Dual Smart Rey, is No. 3 on the Equi-Stat Lifetime Cutting Statistics sires chart with get earnings of more than $30 million. Dual Rey is sired by Dual Pep and out of Nurse Rey (Wyoming Doc x Jay Moss x Rey Jay.)

The Smart Look ($48,723) is the dam of Dual Smart Rey. The Smart Look is No. 3 on the Equi-Stat Lifetime Cutting Statistics dams chart with foal earnings of more than $1.6 million. Smart Lookin Hi Brow, the 1999 NCHA Summer Spectacular Derby Open Champion, and One Smart Lookin Cat, the 2003 NCHA Futurity Open Champion, are two of her major event winners.

The Smart Look is also the dam of WR This Cats Smart, a leading junior sire whose offspring have earned more than $7.4 million in cutting, reined cow horse and reining. The Smart Look is by Smart Little Lena and out of Dox Royal Smoke (Freckles Playboy x Vickie Smoke x Smoke 49). Freckles Playboy is by Jewel’s Leo Bar and out of Gay Jay, by Rey Jay.

TRR Ms Pepcid Olena is the dam of Duals Lucky Charm. TRR Ms Pepcid Olena is sired by Pepcid, an NCHA money-earner sired by Peptoboonsmal. Pepcid, with a limited number of foals to show, has Equi-Stat sire earnings of nearly $100,000 in a variety of events including cutting and ranch versatility. His leading money-winner is Quick Pepcid ($55,863).

The dam of Pepcid is Brazos Lynx, who earned $25,165 in cutting for owner Tommy Houston. She was the 1989 AQHA High-Point Youth Cutting Horse with Emily Houston Barton riding. Brazos Lynx is by Doc’s Lynx and out of Sam’s Gay Bar, by Gay Bar King.

The dam of TRR Ms Pepcid Olena is Bancita Sue Olena, who also produced 2008 NCHA Summer Spectacular Derby Open Champion Peptos Stylish Sue ($226,442). Peptos Stylish Sue is the dam of horses that have earned in excess of $200,000, including Dual Smart Sue ($53,488), by Dual Smart Rey.

Bancita Sue Olena is by Mr Freckles Olena. He is by Colonel Freckles (Jewel’s Leo Bar x Christy Jay x Rey Jay) and out of Kitty Olena (Doc O’Lena x Miss Kansas Kitty x Rondo Leo). Miss Kansas Kitty is a full sister to Mr Gun Smoke. Mr Gun Smoke is the sire of Smoke 49, who sired Vickie Smoke, the third dam of Dual Smart Rey. The dam of Bancita Sue Olena is Miss Bancita Sue, by Bancita. Bancita is an AQHA point-earner and NCHA money-winner sired by Sugar Bars and out of the Leo mare Oncita Leo.

Bancita is the third Sugar Bars/Leo cross in this pedigree, along with the two crosses that come through Jewel’s Leo Bars (Sugar Bars x Leo Pan x Leo). Bud Warren, of Perry, Oklahoma, bought Sugar Bars to cross on his daughters of Leo, and one of the great nicks in the performance Quarter Horse industry was born. But it was A.L. Smith, also of Perry, who bred Jewel’s Leo Bars, and, with partner W.A. Coffey Jr., bred Bancita. These two stallions provide the Sugar Bars/Leo cross as the first nick highlighted in the pedigree of Duals Lucky Charm.

The Marion Flynt Factor

Jewel’s Leo Bars was owned by Marion Flynt, a legend in the cutting horse world. Flynt owned the great broodmare sire Rey Jay. The Rey Jay mares in Duals Lucky Charm’s pedigree include Jay Moss, Gay Jay and Christy Jay. Jay Moss is the second dam of Dual Rey. When Flynt crossed Jewel’s Leo Bars with Gay Jay, he got Freckles Playboy, and with Christy Jay, he got Colonel Freckles. This results in the Jewel’s Leo Bars/Rey Jay cross in these three-quarter brothers, providing a look at the second important nick in the pedigree of Duals Lucky Charm.
