When Senor Shiney Cat posted a 148 down the fence at the East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic, it added to a rein work score of 143 and a herd work mark of 142 for a composite score of 433 that won the East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic Derby Open and Intermediate Open.
The dual wins were worth $5,476 for owner Dominic Conicelli, of Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Bred by Gardiner Quarter Horses, of Ashland, Kansas, Senor Shiney Cat’s pedigree traces an industry legend named Diamonds Sparkle.
WR This Cats Smart, the sire of Senor Shiney Cat, has an Equi-Stat record of $236,474 and was the 2005 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) World Finals Open Show Champion. WR This Cats Smart has become a leading sire known for his versatility with offspring earnings of more than $7 million in all disciplines. His winners include Teles Bout This Cat (out of Teles Lies x Lenas Telesis), an NCHA Non-Pro Horse of the Year, and Tuckers Smart Cat (out of Smoke Time Tuck x Doc Tom Tucker), a two-time National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) Derby Open Champion.
WR This Cats Smart is by all-time leading cutting horse sire High Brow Cat (High Brow Hickory x Smart Little Kitty x Smart Little Lena), whose offspring have earned more than $70 million in cutting.
WR This Cats Smart is out of The Smart Look (Smart Little Lena x Dox Royal Smoke x Freckles Playboy). This gives WR This Cats Smart a 2 x 3 breeding pattern to Smart Little Lena, another industry legend. The Smart Look ($48,723) is Equi-Stat’s No. 3 all-time leading dam of cutting money-winners with earnings of more than $1.6 million. Her foals include NCHA Super Stakes Open Champion Dual Smart Rey ($330,436); NCHA Futurity Open Champion One Smart Lookin Cat ($226,122); and NCHA Summer Spectacular Derby Open Champion Smart Lookin Hi Brow ($221,929).
Senor Shiney Cat is out of Shiney Senorita ($52,720), who carried Todd Crawford to a fifth-place finish in the 2009 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open. Shiney Senorita’s offspring have banked nearly $40,000.
Bred by Carol Rose Quarter Horses, Shiney Senorita is by Shining Spark, the all-time leading sire of reined cow horse money-earners and a leading sire of reiners, too. Shining Spark’s get have accumulated nearly $9 million in all disciplines. Shining Spark is by Genuine Doc (Doc Bar x Gay Bar’s Gen x Gay Bar King) and out of Diamonds Sparkle (Mr Diamond Dude x Pollyanna Rose x Clabber Question).
The dam of Shiney Senorita is Tarizana, a Carol Rose-bred mare and a reined cow horse money-earner with 5.5 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) performance points. She was an NRCHA Stakes Hackamore Limited Open Champion. Tarizana is the dam of eight money-earners that have total earnings of $135,356, according to Equi-Stat. Her two leading money-winners are the full sisters Shiney Senorita and Shiney Tari ($33,706).
Tarizana is by Taris Catalyst ($326,644), who finished second in the 1982 NCHA Futurity Open behind none other than Smart Little Lena. Taris Catalyst (Doc Tari x Minnick’s Goldie x Lacy’s Blue Gold) is an Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Sire whose offspring include Im So Tari ($87,475) and Jodies Doc Tari ($70,306).
The dam of Tarizana is Sparkles Rosezana ($123,380), the 1985 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Open Champion who also earned 253.5 AQHA performance points with World championships in Junior Reining and Senior Heading. Sparkles Rosezana is the dam of 14 AQHA point-earners responsible for 1,071.5 points, including Rosezana Lena (by Doc O’Lena), an AQHA Junior Tie-Down Roping World Champion and AQHA Performance Champion.
Sparkles Rosezana is by Zan Parr Bar and out of Diamonds Sparkle, who was the 1979 AQHA World Show Superhorse. Diamonds Sparkle was an AQHA Champion with 23 halter, 31 Western pleasure, 39 heeling, 22 heading and 28 reining points. Diamonds Sparkle went on to produce foals that have recorded 2,560.5 AQHA points and include one AQHA Champion, four AQHA World champions, 11 ROM earners and 15 superiors.
Shiney Senorita has a 2 X 3 breeding pattern to Diamonds Sparkle, which becomes even more interesting when Shiney Tari, a full sister to Shiney Senorita, is brought back into the picture. When Shiney Tari was bred to to WR This Cats Smart, the resulting foal was Shine Smarter, the 2015 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Limited Open Champion. This makes Senor Shiney Cat and Shine Smarter full brothers in blood. (This means they are by the same sire and out of full sisters.)
Two recent NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champions – CD Diamond in 2012 and Time For The Diamond in 2013 – also have ties to this breeding pattern. CD Diamonds (by CD Olena) is out of Shiners Diamond Girl. Time For The Diamond (by One Time Pepto) is out of Diamonds With Style, who is out of Shiners Diamond Jill. Shiners Diamond Girl and Shiners Diamond Jill are full sisters by Shining Spark and out of Zans Diamond Jackie by Zans Diamond Sun. This gives Shiners Diamond Girl and Shiners Diamond Jill a 2 X 3 breeding pattern to Diamonds Sparkle, as Shining Spark and Zans Diamond Sun are half-brothers out of Diamonds Sparkle.
The bloodlines that tie Senor Shining Cat to Diamonds Sparkle are reminders of the old adage, “Blood will tell,” and the roles some great mares have played in the development of the Western performance horse.
