At the Reining By The Bay, held July 18-24 in Woodside, California, at the Horse Park at Woodside, beautiful weather combined with spectacular views and great reining to create the ideal afternoon. The Futurity Open took place first, and 27 horses vied for the winner’s circle.
It was Da Big Kahuna (Wimpys Little Step x Princessontheprowl x High Brow Cat), bred and owned by Joe and Karen Moran, of Laguna Hills, California, who topped the field when he carried Tracer Gilson to a 222.
“He’s really good-minded. He’s been that way since we started him,” Gilson said of “Kahuna.” “He likes going to work.”
The stallion and Gilson, of Reedley, California, banked $3,355 for the win, elevating Gilson’s Equi-Stat record to $536,450. It was a good start to the journey toward the National Reining Horse Association Futurity for the duo.
