XtraVoodooGunDavid McGee & Xtra Voodoo GunReining is alive and well on the East Coast, and David McGee proved that point Friday afternoon when he topped the Carolina Reining Classic, held in Williamston, North Carolina, with a 147.5 aboard Xtra Voodoo Gun.

McGee, a local North Carolinian, piloted his 4-year-old gelding (Shiners Voodoo Dr x Miss Silver Gun x Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner]) to the top score out of 40 horse-and-rider pairs from the next-to-last draw. McGee said he remembered immediately thinking, “I won!” as he left the arena at the Bob Martin Eastern Agricultural Center and heard his score called.

He was right. McGee and Xtra Voodoo Gun finished first in the Derby Levels 4 and 3 and Prime Time Non-Pro. He also won the Atlantic Breeders Incentive (ABI) Levels 4 and 3 Non-Pro. Altogether, the duo garnered $9,982.

Prior to his performance at the Carolina Classic, his Equi-Stat record reflected more than $23,000. McGee’s lifetime earnings were nearly $90,000 when he arrived at the show, and with these wins and his showing aboard Chic Out My Bling, his record surpassed $100,000.

The Level 2 Non-Pro Championship went to Sherry Wayne and Lil Juice (Smart Like Juice x Mary Jo Starlight), who marked a 145.5. Lil Miss Red Pine, ridden by Megan Snyder, DVM, earned a 144 from the judges to finish first in Level 1.

The ABI Levels 2 and 1 Non-Pro titles were split between Grace Wilson and Tucker Lane. Wilson rode Bueno Summer Starlet, while Lane rode Dual Chrome Exhaust. Both marked a 143 for the Championship.
