Carolina Classic Derby Open Ends With Tie

CashinMalibusChexCashin Malibus Chex & Dean BrownThe Carolina Reining Classic, held May 12-15 in Williamston, North Carolina, crowned two Derby Level 4 Open Champions on Saturday, May 14. Cashin Malibus Chex, ridden by Dean Brown, tied Lil Dreamin Magnum, ridden by Jeremy Gates, for the win.

Lil Dreamin Magnum (Magnum Chic Dream x Myo Starlight x Paddys Irish Whiskey), bred by Spence Bell, of Maysville, Oklahoma, ran as draw 18 and marked a 151 to take the lead. The 5-year-old stallion, owned by Kathy Biesecker, of Honeoye Falls, New York, and Gates held that spot until draw 26.

Brown rode in aboard Robert Santagata’s homebred stallion Cashin Malibus Chex (Too Busy Cashin Chex x Malibu Whiz x Topsail Whiz) and matched the 151 score and agreed to split the title with Gates when no other horse-and-rider team in the 38-horse finals could top them.

LilDreaminMagnumLil Dreamin Magnum & Jeremy GatesCashin Malibus Chex and Lil Dreamin Magnum earned $4,302 each for their Derby Level 4 Open Co-Championships, as well as $3,389 for their Atlantic Breeders Incentive (ABI) Level 4 Open titles.

The Derby and ABI Level 3 Open championships also went to Lil Dreamin Magnum and Gates, of Bloomingburg, New York. Altogether, the two titles were worth another $5,627.
