It would be an understatement to say that Harper Conner was on a roll at this year’s Cactus Reining Classic. He co-owns Lucas Oil Derby Level 4 Open Champion Platinum Vintage with Silver Spurs Equine LLC, and Conner also showed three horses in the finals of the Protect The Harvest Derby Non-Pro. He won the Non-Pro with Jacs Princess, was Reserve with Vintage GQ and placed 11th with Revolutionary Jewels. The earnings for these four horses was $22,678.

Platinum Vintage and Equi-Stat Elite $4 Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani were the big winners, collecting $12,985. Fappani was showing the horse for the first time, after Platinum Vintage and Equi-Stat Elite $4 Million Rider Todd Bergen had already earned $152,571 together. Bergen rode Platinum Vintage through his 5-year-old year, during which they won the 2015 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby Open Championship.

Sire Line:

Platinum Vintage and Vintage GQ (out of LF Remelynx x Reminic) were both bred by Conner and his wife, Petra Conner. They are both sired by A Sparkling Vintage ($54,164), who was the 2001 National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) Level 3 Open Champion under Ruben Vandorp. A Sparkling Vintage is the sire of earners of more than $800,000, according to Equi-Stat, including NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion Not Ruf At All.

A Sparkling Vintage is by Shining Spark (Genuine Doc x Diamonds Sparkle x Mr Diamond Dude). Shining Spark ($62,674) was the 1993 American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Junior Reining World Champion and 1994 NRHA Derby Open Champion. Equi-Stat Elite $8 Million Sire Shining Spark has offspring excelling in multiple disciplines including reining and reined cow horse. His leading reiner is Shining N Sassy, the 2008 NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion.

Vintage Badger is the dam of A Sparkling Vintage, who is her leading money-earning son. She is an unshown daughter of Peppy San Badger out of Taris Vintage by Doc Tari. Vintage Badger has an Equi-Stat offspring record of $96,830 that includes Vintage Boots ($21,594), winner of the 2004 Rocky Mountain Reining Horse Association Summer Slide Futurity Open.

Vintage Badger is a full sister to Taris Little Vintage, the 1995 AQHA Junior Reining World Champion. Taris Little Vintage is the No. 1 dam in the Equi-Stat Lifetime Reining Statistics. Her foals have banked $709,735 and include 2006 NRHA Futurity Level 4 Open Champion Taris Designer Genes.

Dam Line:

Starjac Miss is the dam of Platinum Vintage. She is an unshown mare bred by Sally Brown and currently owned by the Conners. Her offspring have earned $210,861, with Platinum Vintage her No. 1 earner. His full brother Vintage Glamour ($39,379) is Starjac Miss’ second-leading earner. Conner and Vintage Glamour were the 2015 High Roller Reining Classic Derby Level 2 Non-Pro Champions.

The pedigree of Starjac Miss is a great example of the Hollywood Jac 86/Great Pine cross that has served the reining industry so well. Her sire, Hollywood Jac 86, was a two-time NRHA Non-Pro World Champion in 1974 and 1975 ridden by Richard Greenberg. Hollywood Jac 86 was the NRHA’s first Million Dollar Sire. He is by Easter King (King P-234 x Gocha H x Cuate) and out of Miss Hollywood (Hollywood Gold x Miss Buggins 86 x Buggins [TB]).

The dam of Starjac Miss is A Great Star, an unshown daughter of Great Pine. A Great Star is the dam of foals that have earned $119,143, according to Equi-Stat. Her leading money-earner is Stars Fancy Jac ($89,061), the 1992 NRHA Futurity Open Reserve Champion.

Ridden by Larry Rose, Great Pine competed in the old state fair reining events, where an extra run determined the overall show champion. These classes were the forerunner of the NRHA. Great Pine went on to sire foals that earned $658,904, including Im Great Too and Great Simon Sez, both NRHA Futurity Open Reserve Champions. Great Pine is by Poco Bright Bar (Poco Pine x Charlotte Ann x Peppys Pride P), and his dam is Crier’s Betty (Town Crier x Dandy Van x Billy Van).

A Great Star is out of Bennett Star Bar (Bright Bar x Star Bandera x Bandera Helton), who is the maternal granddam of horses that have won $231,192, topped by Stars Fancy Jac. The second-leading money-winner on this list is Kelinds Taffy Jac ($47,448), who won the 1990 NRHA Super Stakes with Clint Haverty in the saddle. Kelinds Taffy Jac is out of Great Kelind Miss, who is a full sister to A Great Star.
