Five New Champions Crowned at The Cattlemen’s Derby & Classic

RedHotMetal MArmstrongMike Armstrong & Red Hot MetalMike Armstrong, of Marietta, Oklahoma, and Red Hot Metal topped the 6-horse Derby Amateur finals after marking a 217, taking home the Championship. They also received a winner’s check worth $3,500, which boosted the red roan stallion’s earnings to $10,533.

“He’s a simple horse,” Armstrong said of “Red.” “He’s easy. He’s a stud, and you’d never know it. He’s just a great horse to get along with.”

Red is by Metallic Cat and was bred by Alvin and Becky Fults. He is the highest-earning offspring out of Spots Hot Shot (by Spots Hot).

The Reserve Championship went to Michelle Van Dyke, of Sheridan, Montana, and Boonsmate (Boonsmal Cee Lena x Ellies Little Mate x Smart Little Mate) who marked a 213.5. Boonsmate, who was bred by Kristina Fish, added $2,482 to his lifetime earnings.
