Inaugural Winter Premier Sale Posts Solid Results

Held on Feb. 20 prior to the finals of the National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) World’s Greatest Horseman competition, the sale posted a healthy average price of just more than $12,500.

The highest seller, with a sale price of $122,000 was Shiners Crown Jewel, consigned by Alpha Quarter Horses LLC and purchased by Roberto Garza, of Hacienda de Guadalupe. The 2010 stallion (Shining Spark x Cattilion x High Brow Cat) earned $17,324 in reining and was a finalist in the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity and National Reining Breeders Classic. His dam was a National Cutting Horse Association Futurity Open finalist who earned more than $150,000 during her career. She has produced extremely versatile earners of nearly $275,000 including Harley (by Spots Hot), an earner of $186,821 in cutting and Sparktilion (by Shining Spark), an earner of $46,488 in reined cow horse.

Two horses hit the $40,000 mark: 2009 mare One Shiney Pistol (One Time Pepto x Shiners Lil Pistol x Shining Spark), consigned by Roxanne Koepsell and purchased by Carlos DaSilva, and 2014 stallion Two Smoking Barrels, consigned by Turnabout Farm Inc. and purchased by Miguel Carazos. One Shiney Pistol, who sold with a breeding to Smooth As A Cat, was the top-selling mare, while Two Smoking Barrels (Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner] x Chic Olena Starbuck x Smart Starbuck) was the highest-priced 2-year-old.

The highest-selling gelding, Hiada Rey Cat, was a NRCHA Youth Reserve World Champion that morning before selling for $16,000 later in the day. Paul and Amy Bailey consiged the 2008 gelding (TR Dual Rey x Ladys Pagan x Haidas Little Pep) who was purchased by Lowry Alkire.

No strangers to successful horse sales, Winter Premier Sale owners Tim McQuay, Tom McCutcheon and Dell Hendricks, and management team Mandy McCutcheon and Jennifer Anderson of The Sale Company agree on one thing.

“The most important thing to us is our customer,” Mandy McCutcheon stated. “If we promote our consignments properly, represent them transparently, and treat both our buyers and sellers with the respect they deserve, we expect a long and healthy lifetime for this sale just like we have had at the Legacy Reining Breeders Sale.”

“With horse sales available all over the country, it is our job to set ourselves apart as a management team,” Anderson added. “If our customers can count on us for honesty and integrity, we can all sleep well at night and expect to have a good sale.”

Hosting a first-time sale is always a risk, and the Winter Premier Sale owners are thankful to the horse community for the overwhelming support the sale received.

“The consignments were strong and diverse, and I think that helped to draw such a great crowd,” McQuay said. “It’s always a little nerve-racking, wondering if there will be enough buyers to make the sale successful, but we had so much support from both the reiners and the cow horse people, plus our sponsors and staff, that we were really thrilled with the sale and are excited about the future.”
