Gary Bellenfant rode Gins Solano (Tanquery Gin x Solano Jill x Doc’s Solano) to a final-round score of 221.5 to win the 1985 Breeder’s Cup Open Championship.
Bellenfant, an Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Rider, is pictured with his herd and turnback helpers: (right to left) Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Rider Kenny Patterson, Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Rider Mike Mowery, Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Rider Chubby Turner, Bellenfant (pictured horseback) and Equi-Stat Elite $4 Million Rider Greg Welch, who died in 2004. At the far left, also horseback, are Welch’s son, Lance Welch, and Bellenfant’s son, Beau.
Gins Solano, a 1981 gelding, earned $207,176 in 1985. He competed for another 15 years, retiring after the 2000 season with a lifetime bankroll of $280,329.
