When Austin Shepard rode High Brow Clay 012 into the James Brown Arena on Jan. 24, he was riding to a record third straight Augusta Futurity 4-Year-Old Open Championship. They scored a 224, winning the first-place check of $12,000.

High Brow Clay 012 is owned by Plantation Farms LLC, of Denham Springs, Louisiana. He was bred by James Eakin, of Hondo, Texas, who is the current owner of his dam, Cash N Scooter. His sire is High Brow CD, the 2007 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Futurity Open Champion.

Shepard, an Equi-Stat Elite $6 Million Rider, won the 2008 Augusta Futurity 4-Year-Old Open riding High Brow CD. It was the first of five NCHA aged-event championships won by the stallion, who was the 2008 NCHA Horse of the Year.

High Brow CD ($543,161) is sired by High Brow Cat (High Brow Hickory x Smart Little Kitty x Smart Little Lena). The dam of High Brow CD is Sweet Little CD ($106,185), who carried Russell Harrison to win the Open at the 2004 NCHA World Finals.

The win was so big it moved them from 50th to fifth in the year-end standings. Sweet Little CD is the dam of foals that have earned more than $900,000 including Sweet Little Cats ($159,477); Incredi Babe ($61,686) and Sweet Lil Catolena ($39,498).

Sweet Little CD is sired by NCHA Futurity Open Champion CD Olena (Doc O’Lena x CD Chica San Badger x Peppy San Badger). The dam of Sweet Little CD is Sweet Lil Lena ($123,268), who was the 1988 Tropicana 4-Year-Old Open Co-Champion with Bill Freeman in the saddle. She was the 1988 Bonanza 4-Year-Old Non-Pro Champion under Eli Shtabsky. Sweet Lil Lena is the dam of foals that have earned $805,236 including Sweet Lil Pepto ($237,783) and Pepto Taz ($132,449). Sweet Lil Pepto is an Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Sire and Pepto Taz is an Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Sire.

Sweet Lil Lena is sired by Smart Little Lena (Doc O’Lena x Smart Peppy x Peppy San). She is out of Sonscoot (Son O Sugar x Miss Tiny x Poco Tivio). Sonscoot is the dam of a number of money winners including Equi-Stat Elite $4 Million Sire Smart Lil Scoot ($266,000).

Cash N Scooter was bred by Button and Judy Garrett, of Plano, Texas. She was shown by Chubby Turner to earnings of $67,683 and a Reserve Championship at the 1999 Pro Cutters Shootout. She was a 1998 NCHA Super Stakes Open finalist. Cash N Scooter is sired by Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Sire Cash Quixote Rio ($604,663), the 1990 and 1993 NCHA Open World Champion. His aged-event career included a double win at the 1988 NCHA Summer Spectacular Derby with Kobie Wood in the Open and Corinne Heiligbrodt in the Non-Pro. Cash Quixote Rio is sired by Doc Quixote (Doc Bar x Magnolia Gal x Bull’s Eye) and out of Poco Lucy Cash (Poco Rip Cash x Lilucy x Isiah Hunt).

Cash N Scooter is out of Clays Little Peppy, who was also bred by the Garretts. Clays Little Peppy was shown by a number of riders, but mostly by Buster Welch. They were the 1989 NCHA Super Stakes Open Reserve Champions. At the 1991 Augusta Futurity, she won the Classic Open with Greg Welch, who had taken over some of the riding duties for Buster after his heart surgery. Clays Little Peppy is the dam of foals that have earned $826,237. They include Clays Little Kit ($235,433) and Mr San Tule Clay ($103,066).

Clays Little Peppy is by Peppy San Badger and out of Miss Doc Smoke (Doc’s Smoke x Doc’s Loblolly x Doc Bar). Miss Doc Smoke was unshown, but became the dam of foals that earned $391,154 including her second-leading money-earner, Play Like Clay ($78,844).

The Garretts bought Miss Doc Smoke from Buttons’ parents, George and Juanita Garrett. When Button and Judy took Miss Doc Smoke to be bred to Peppy San Badger, they also took Doc’s Loblolly to be bred to the stallion for George and Juanita. They got Badger San Doc out of Doc’s Loblolly. Badger San Doc was sold to Buster and Sheila Welch, and Sheila showed Badger San Doc to the 1989 NCHA Super Stakes Non-Pro Co-Reserve Championship. Badger San Doc is the dam of foals that have won $562,636 including Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Sire Smart Sugar Badger.

Austin Shepard had high expectations for High Brow Clay 012 going into the 2015 NCHA Futurity Open based on his stellar pedigree. A lost cow in the first round ended their NCHA Futurity dreams, but a win in the 2016 Augusta Futurity has this cutter on track for the rest of the year.
