Winning a championship in a competitive division is no small feat, but topping the class with a major injury seems nearly impossible. Laura Landers defied the odds and bested the 4-Year-Old Unlimited Amateur with a broken femur.
Suffering from an injury of that caliber is enough to leave most people resting for months, but Landers didn’t let anything stop her from entering the ring at the Abilene Spectacular on CD Last Pudden (High Brow CD x Pudden Freckles x Freckles Taco) and finishing on top with a 217.
The win was worth $4,000, which brought her Equi-Stat record to $257,967. The win also pushed her gelding’s lifetime earnings to more than $7,000.
Parke Greeson and Playin With Monty (Mr Playinstylish x Fletch The Cat x Royal Fletch) finished just behind the pair with a 216 to earn the Reserve title, worth $3,200.
Even though many find Landers’ dedication and fearlessness unbelievable, Landers gives all of the credit to her horse.
“To me, it’s more about the horse, and I don’t like to focus on my own successes,” she said. “He’s a great colt, and I love to see him succeed.”
