In the Money: Pricey Prospects

When it comes to buying futurity prospects, many people prefer to buy unstarted yearlings. The yearling is a clean slate and can be started in any direction and by any method the new owner chooses. Conformation and pedigree play key roles when deciding whether or not to gamble on a yearling with unlimited potential.

In 2015, 1,008 yearlings went through sales rings at the major cutting, reining and reined cow horse sales. Including pass outs, those horses grossed $17,108,600 for an average of $16,973. A total of 167 horses were repurchased, with 841 changing hands for net sales of $13,685,800. Yearlings sold in 2015 averaged $16,273 with a $10,000 median.

Of the 22 yearlings that sold for $75,000 or more in 2015, 15 went through cutting sales, five went through reining sales and two went through reined cow horse sales.
