The outstanding show mare Miss Ella Rey has carried Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Rider Ed Dufurrena and his children, Brandon and Rieta Dufurrena, to earnings of nearly $400,000. Her latest accomplishment put Rieta in 12th place in the 2015 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Non-Pro World standings. As a broodmare, Miss Ella Rey has now given the Dufurrena family the NCHA Futurity Open Champion Stevie Rey Von and NCHA Non-Pro Horse of the Year Purple Reyn. Brandon is the breeder of record for the full siblings by Metallic Cat.

Brandon won the NCHA World Finals Non-Pro Show Championship with Purple Reyn and placed fifth in the year-end standings. Rieta won the NCHA Futurity Limited Non-Pro on Stevie Rey Von, while Ed advanced through the Open go-rounds and won the NCHA Futurity Open finals.

SIRE LINE

Metallic Cat ($637,711) won the 2008 NCHA Futurity Open with Beau Galyean and was the 2009 NCHA Horse of the Year. The young stallion recently surpassed $6 million in offspring earnings, with foals like Meteles Cat ($261,679), Sweet Metallic ($157,607) and Metallic Little Cat ($135,879). Metallic Cat is sired by High Brow Cat (High Brow Hickory x Smart Little Kitty x Smart Little Lena).

The dam of Metallic Cat is Chers Shadow, by Peptoboonsmal. She was a 2002 Abilene Spectacular 4-Year-Old Open finalist. Her dam is Shesa Smarty Lena ($224,004), by Smart Little Lena, who was sixth in the 1992 NCHA Futurity Open under Lindy Burch. They went on to win the 1996 NCHA World Finals Show Championship in the Open. Shesa Smarty Lena is the dam of horses that have won $201,988. Her leading money winner is Pantera Cat ($67,440), by High Brow Cat.

Shesa Smarty Lena is out of Shesa Playmate ($98,938), the winner of the 1982 NCHA Derby Open under Terry Riddle. Shesa Playmate is by Freckles Playboy and out of the 1975 NCHA Futurity Open Champion Lenaette, who is by 1970 NCHA Futurity Open Champion Doc O’Lena.

Lenaette was the first NCHA Futurity winner sired by an NCHA Futurity winner. She was bred and ridden in the Futurity by Shorty Freeman and owned by Terry Riddle. Lenaette is the dam of foals that earned $546,886, including Playboys Angela, ($152,966) and Freckles Merada ($106,900).

The dam of Lenaette is Bar Sock Babe (Bar El Do x Dusty Socks x Gold King Bailey). Bar Socks Babe was a mare Freeman had bought to breed to Doc O’Lena. Bar Socks Babe not only produced Lenaette, but a number of aged-event finalists including 1984 NCHA Derby Non-Pro Reserve Champion Tamborlena.

DAM LINE

Miss Ella Rey was bred by the LKC Ranch in Longmont, Colorado. Brandon purchased her from Lloyd Claycomb in 2007 and rode the mare to the 2011 NCHA Super Stakes Limited Non-Pro Championship. She earned back-to-back American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Amateur Cutting World Championships with Brandon in 2013 and Rieta in 2014. Brandon repeated his Amateur World Championship in 2015 with Purple Reyn, while Ed rode Purple Reyn to the 2015 AQHA Reserve World Championship in Junior Cutting.

The sire of Miss Ella Rey is Dual Rey ($105,038), winner of the 1998 Memphis Futurity Open. Dual Rey (Dual Pep x Nurse Rey x Wyoming Doc) is an Equi-Stat Elite $24 Million Sire, with foals like Reys Desire ($409,851), TR Dual Rey ($353,174), Dual Smart Rey ($330,436) and Rockin W ($329,722).

Miss Ella Rey is out of Huggs Olena ($81,214), an NCHA Summer Spectacular Classic/Challenge Non-Pro finalist. Huggs Olena is the dam of only three foals, including Reynie Day Huggs, a South Point Futurity Limited Open finalist. Huggs Olena is by Smart Chic Olena (Smart Little Lena x Gay Sugar Chic x Gay Bar King).

Huggs Olena is out of Clarks Hugalot ($9,342), by Clark’s Doc Bar (Doc Bar x Nevada Starlet x Nevada King). The dam of Clarks Hugalot is Hugger 3, by Freno. Hugger 3 is the dam of Clarks Hugme ($51,350), a Superior cutting horse with 141 AQHA points, Another Hugger ($37,174) and Clarks Hugger ($31,391). All are sired by Clark’s Doc Bar.

The mating of Clark’s Doc Bar and Hugger 3 is an interesting combination of bloodlines. Clark’s Doc Bar is sired by Doc Bar, who is out of Dandy Doll, by Texas Dandy, by My Texas Dandy. Freno, the sire of Hugger 3, is by My Texas Dandy Jr, by My Texas Dandy. Nevada Starlet, the dam of Clark’s Doc Bar, is by Nevada King, by Lucky Blanton, by Mark. Freno is out of Gill Cattle Company Mare 16, by Mark. Mark is sired by Red Cloud and out of Maga. Red Cloud and Maga were both sired by Possum (Traveler x Jenny x Sykes Rondo).

Miss Ella Rey is an outstanding show mare who competed and won with the best. Now, as the dam of an NCHA Futurity Open Champion and Non-Pro Horse of the Year, she is building a reputation as a broodmare who can produce horses that compete and win with the best.
