I am happy to report we had a great time at the Futurity this year. With this being NRHA’s 50th Anniversary, there was a great program and video recognizing all the history-makers in the NRHA.
Lyle Lovett also performed for the members, which we all enjoyed very much. Thank you Lyle! As usual, we had a crazy three weeks. We had several sale horses, including a 2-year-old son of Pale Face Dunnit who sold for $100,000 in the prospect sale. He is going to be in training with Tanya Jenkins; we will look forward to seeing them together next year.
My Futurity horses were all champions in my book. Each one of them gave me everything they had. I was very happy with them and how they showed. I ended up third on Cashing Black Chex. This is a colt we bred and raised, so this big win was very exciting for us. My wife and son showed his mom, Blazing In Black, she was a terrific mare, so it was great to have this colt do so well.
The Futurity still eludes me. I have won every other major event and over $3 million but still have not achieved my goal of winning this particular event! I will continue to chase that dream. In the meantime, I want to thank my staff, family and customers for continuing to support me. Without you, I know I would not be successful.
Congratulations to my friends Casey Deary and Franco Bertolani — you guys were great. Both of you were the winners in my book. I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Chanuka. I am looking forward to another New Year and a chance to chase that dream!
Watch Craig ride at the NRHA Futurity from the back of his horse! Watch video here.
Reining horse professional Craig Schmersal is the fourth-leading rider of all-time, with earnings of more than $3.2 million. Over the last decade, Craig has won almost all of the major reining events, often taking all three of his entries into the finals.
