Gayle Karanges Bests Southern Cutting Futurity Non-Pro

The Futurity Non-Pro saw Gayle Karanges and Dual Smart Dee Jay in the winner’s circle after they bested a field of 24 horse-and-rider combinations.

Karanges, of Arlington, Texas, topped the Futurity Non-Pro, which was held as a pencil finals, with a 431. She and her gelding (Dual Smart Rey x Meradas Dee Jay x Freckles Merada) marked a 215 in the first go-round and earned a 216 in the second-go round. Their performances also earned them a first-place finish in the Southern Cutting Futurity Stallion Incentive.

Dual Smart Dee Jay, who was bred by EE Ranches of Texas Inc., is a half-brother to Dee Acre Doc (Bob Acre Doc x Meradas Dee Jay x Freckles Merada), who has earned $114,648 in his own cutting career. Prior to the Southern Cutting Futurity, Dual Smart Dee Jay had $11,216 in lifetime earnings.

“He is really gritty and tries hard,” Karanges said. “I think he really likes the cutting.”

Priscilla Crawley Wilson rode Yadayadayadatime (One Time Pepto x Rio CD Yadayadayada x CD Olena) to the Futurity Non-Pro Reserve title with a 428 (214/214). The stallion is owned by David Wilson and was bred by Vick Pannell, of Alexander, Arkansas.

Derby Non-Pro

In the final Non-Pro event of the competition, Cade Shepard and Twistful Thinking (One Time Pepto x Some Kinda Twister x Freckles Fancy Twist) finished on top with a 222 after improving their first go-round score of 216 by 6 points. In addition, the performance won the pair the Derby Limited Non-Pro Championship.
