The final day of the Southern Cutting Futurity, held in Jackson Mississippi, was packed full of competitors vying for big checks and division titles. The Futurity Non-Pro saw Gayle Karanges and Dual Smart Dee Jay in the winner’s circle after they bested a field of 24 horse-and-rider combinations.
Karanges, of Arlington, Texas, topped the Futurity Non-Pro, which was held as a pencil finals, with a 431. She and her gelding (Dual Smart Rey x Meradas Dee Jay x Freckles Merada) marked a 215 in the first go-round and earned a 216 in the second-go round. Their performances also earned them a first-place finish in the Southern Cutting Futurity Stallion Incentive.
Dual Smart Dee Jay, who was bred by EE Ranches of Texas Inc., is a half-brother to Dee Acre Doc (Bob Acre Doc x Meradas Dee Jay x Freckles Merada), who has earned $114,648 in his own cutting career. Prior to the Southern Cutting Futurity, Dual Smart Dee Jay had $11,216 in lifetime earnings.
“He is really gritty and tries hard,” Karanges said. “I think he really likes the cutting.”
