Spooks Gotta Gun was bred by Eric Storey, of Henagar, Alabama, and is owned by Silver Spurs Equine, of Scottsdale, Arizona. He is by Grays Starlight and is the third-highest earning offspring out of the John Gun mare Katie Gun, who has produced 17 offspring that have won a total of $626,729. Spooks Gotta Gun is a half-brother to Colonels Smoking Gun (Gunner), who is by Colonelfourfreckle and is the leading performer out of Katie Gun with $177,386 in earnings. He is also a half-brother to Hollywood Gotta Gun and Dun It Gotta Gun, who are both by Hollywood Dun It.

As a reining performer, Spooks Gotta Gun banked $81,638. The majority of that money was earned in 2008, when Equi-Stat Elite $4 Million Rider Andrea Fappani rode him to a third place finish in the Derby Level 4 Open at the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby, garnering $31,864. The next month the pair won the Derby Level 4 Open at Reining By The Bay, winning $10,000.

Though he continued to post money to Equi-Stat until 2009, the 13-year-old stallion’s first foal crop was born in 2007. His leading performer and so far only producing offspring, Spooks Gotta Whiz (out of Prettywhizprettydoes x Topsail Whiz), was born that year. Spooks Gotta Whiz earned $363,435 in the reining pen, including a championship at the 2010 NRHA Futurity, and has already produced three money-earning offspring. His top earner, 2012 stallion Thebettertohearuwith (out of Chex Out The Cowgirl x Lean With Me), has had successful performances this year with Fappani at Reining By The Bay and the High Roller Reining Classic and has already posted $14,475 to his lifetime earnings.

Spooks Gotta Gun’s second-highest earning offspring is The Kids Gotta Gun (out of Melimelo Kid x Brennas Kid), who has earned $77,883. The gelding and Dean Brown took the Derby Open Championship at this year’s Pink Ribbon Reining. Spooks Gotta Run (out of Prettywhizprettydoes) is his third-highest earning, with $64,814.

To date, Spooks Gotta Gun has produced 103 performing offspring. Ninety-nine of those have made their money through reining, and a handful have made money in reined cow horse, ranch versatility, barrel racing and ranch pleasure. Three Spooks Gotta Gun offspring placed in the money recently at the High Roller Reining Classic, with Spooks Dunit winning the Futurity Level 2 Open Championship. Altogether, all three added more than $15,000 to Spooks Gotta Gun’s sire record, pushing him to $1,003,781.
