Photo by Art & LightThe World Cup Reining Bronze Trophy Open Final was one of the most fascinating in the history of the Americana – and one of the most emotional ones as well. This was world-class reining, and it ended with a win by Nu Chexomatic and the retirement of one of the best European reining horses in recent history, Great Sun Burst.

Sixteen horses and riders had made it into the finals, with NRHA Million Dollar Rider Bernard Fonck aboard What A Wave (Tidal Wave Jack x What A Sunrise) leading after the go-round and Sail On Top Whizard (Whizard Jac x Miss N Sis) close behind in second. NRHA Million Dollar Rider Cody Sapergia aboard Nu Chexomatic (Nu Chex To Cash x Tejons Texie Lena) and Gotta Gold Chain (Jacs Electric Spark x Snip O Chex) placed third and fourth in the go-round.

As the fifth rider, Cody Sapergia rode Gotta Gold Chain for Jacpoint Quarter Horses to a 224, earning plus points in every maneuver and especially in the right turns and stops. None of the following riders came close – not even Bernard Fonck aboard Sail On Top Whizard, one of the hot favorites. The stallion, owned by Danny Cerato, started with great left turns, but had a half-point penalties with each judge on the right turns, resulting in a total of 220.

Then came Sapergia once more – this time aboard Nu Chexomatic. The 8-year-old palomino gelding earned plus points in each maneuver and plus-1s for the right turns by each of the judges. A run full of style and finesse ended with three spectacular stops and a score of 227. This held for the high score, taking the Championship, bronze trophy and $12,000 in prize money.
