Lach Perks Wins Idaho Futurity Non-Pro Championship

Derby Amateur

A tie in the Derby Amateur finals resulted in a co-championship between Terry Ratto, riding Chickaroos Firefox, and Don Noble, aboard Pretty Pleasing Rey. Each pair marked a 216.5 and took home $1,870.

Chickaroos Firefox (Hick Chicaroo x TF Smartlittle Linda x Smart Little Lena) is a 4-year-old gelding who was bred by Latigo Canyon Ranch LLC., of Los Olivos, California. To date, he has $37,896 in cutting earnings and is the highest earning offspring out of TF Smartlittle Linda. He is owned by Ratto, of Morgan Hill, California. Last year at the PCCHA/Holy Cow Performance Horses Futurity, Equi-Stat Elite $1 Million Rider Morgan Cromer rode the gelding to the Futurity Open Championship.

Milton-Freewater, Oregon resident Noble, who has earned $15,091 in the cutting pen, said that Pretty Pleasing Rey (Dual Rey x Pretty Pleasing Sue x Smart Little Lena) belongs to his wife, who couldn’t be there to show. He described the mare as a very kind horse that is easy to get along with, and her willingness to work, combined with Noble’s ability to cut the cows he wanted, even from the last draw, ended up being a winning combination.

The mare was bred by Rose Valley Ranch, of Vail, Colorado. She is a half-sister to Bets Pretty Sue (by Bets CD), who has cutting earnings of $110,730.

Classic/Challenge Amateur

IF VGove ImSmoothAsADream 15KBPValerie Gove & Im Smooth As A DreamIm Smooth As A Dream proved to be so in the Classic/Challenge Amateur when he and owner Valerie Gove, of Fort Lupton, Colorado, marked a 223 to win the Championship, beating the current leading score of 217. The 5-year-old gelding added $1,766 to his $54,457 in lifetime earnings. He is by Smooth As A Cat and is the leading offspring out of Yanceys Dream, who is by Dual Pep.

Gove, who has garnered $36,266 in the cutting pen, said she was surprised to win.

“I shouldn’t be surprised, because Kenny [Platt] is great,” she amended. “This is the third time I’ve shown this horse. Kenny and Grant Setnicka helped me a lot picking the cattle and telling me exactly where to be, which helped me a ton!”

Last year’s Champions, Lesley Day and Bueno Chex Madi, had marked the 217 from the fourth draw in the 13-horse finals, which held for the Reserve Championship. They took home $1,500 to Bend, Oregon. Bueno Chex Madi (High Brow CD x Bueno Chex Dually x Dual Pep), who was bred by Sunrise Ranch, LLC., of Fayetteville, Arkansas, boasts more than $57,000 in earnings.
