In The Stats: PCCHA Futurity, Cutting Stakes, Gelding Stakes and Classic/Challenge

The annual Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA) Futurity, Cutting Stakes, Gelding Stakes and Classic/Challenge kicks off Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the California Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, California.

The first PCCHA Futurity show, held in 1982 at Sacramento, California, drew 167 contestants who competed for $50,000 in added money and a $211,410 purse. The 2004 show, which drew 700 entries and offered $517,608 added money, paid out the largest purse to date – a whopping $1,060,466.The popular West Coast cutting continues to grow by leaps and bounds with 740 entries competing for an $828,506 purse that included $329,703 in added money.

Boon San Kitty (High Brow Cat x Boon San Sally x Boon Bar), a 2000 mare bred by Walton’s Rocking W Ranch, of Mineral Wells, Texas, is the show’s leading horse (all ages/all divisions) with earnings of $92,624. Ridden by Ed Flynn, the mare won the 2003 PCCHA Futurity Open Championship and the 2004 PCCHA Stakes Championship.

Tim Smith, of Temecula, California, is the leading Open rider with $739,011 in show earnings. Smith’s high-dollar earner at the show is Cats Full Moon (High Brow Cat x Darlin Little Dually x Dual Pep), a 2004 stallion bred by Brinkman Ranch, of Lockeford, California, who Smith rode to win the 2007 PCCHA Futurity Open Championship and a $28,100 check.

Non-pro rider-turned-professional trainer Sandy Bonelli, of Petaluma, California, ranks as the show’s top Non-Pro rider with $172,974. Dustin Adams, of Poolville, Texas, who is the second-leading non-pro rider, has won $171,261.

High Brow Cat is the No. 1 sire. His offspring have won $1,715,255 at the show – more than twice as much as Dual Rey, whose offspring have won $716,200. High Brow Cat’s leading money-earner for the show is Boon San Kitty.
