Jacob Taurel Emerges Victorious in Derby Unlimited Amateur

During the Derby Unlimited Amateur finals, held Saturday, May 16, the duo captured the Championship by marking a 218.

This win earned the horse-and-rider team $6,515. While Taurel, of Whitesboro, Texas, now holds an Equi-Stat record of $93,752, the paycheck more than quadrupled WH Cat And Mouse’s lifetime earnings.

“My mare was going awesome, so we didn’t have to change much from the original plan,” Taurel said. “She’s a real solid mare and I am lucky to have her.”

WH Cat And Mouse (Wild Haired Cat x Colored Field Mouse [PT] x Color Me Smart [PT]) is owned by Taurel’s father, David Taurel, of Caracus, Venezuela, and bred by Charlotte Green, of Alpine, Texas.

Lica Pinkston, of Alice, Texas, and her homebred gelding Stylish Metallic Cat (Metallic Cat x Stylish Lil Player x  Playin Stylish) took the Derby Unlimited Amateur Reserve Championship with a 216. The win came with a check worth $5,495, bringing the horse’s 2015 earnings to $21,677, according to Equi-Stat.

Lee Gandy, of Frisco, Texas, and Razzberry Cat marked a 214 to win the Derby Amateur Championship and earn a paycheck worth $7,282. According to Equi-Stat, Razzberry Cat (WR This Cats Smart x Chics Pretty Tari x Smart Chic Olena) more than doubled her earnings with the win.

Gandy purchased Razzberry Cat, who was bred by Wagonhound Land and Livestock, of Douglas, Wyoming, before the 2014 National Cutting Horse Association Futurity.

“She’s panning out to be a good one,” Gandy said. “I’ve probably never ridden a horse that is as cowy as her. It makes the run more dynamic.”

Mike Schraeder, of Tomball, Texas, and Bearcat Merada (Cats Merada x Bearlyaboonsmal x Peptoboonsmal) took home the Reserve Championship with a score of 212. Schraeder earned a paycheck worth $5,673 with the mare, who was bred by Cowan Select Horses LLC, of Havre, Montana.
