The Loss of Steven DeFrang

SenbarsGottaGunEditedSteven DeFrang & Senbars Gotta Gun • WaltenberryThe reining community is mourning the loss of Steven DeFrang, 40, of Zumbrota, Minnesota, who died Thursday, April 23, 2015, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

DeFrang was born Aug. 20, 1974, to James and Rita (Ring) DeFrang in Zumbrota, Minnesota. He graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1993. On Sept. 25, 1999, he married Jessica Finnesgard in Bellechester, Minnesota.

DeFrang enjoyed hunting, the outdoors and spending time with his children. He was also a trainer for many years, acquiring $203,819 in lifetime earnings, according to Equi-Stat.

Some of his most recent accomplishments include piloting Senbars Gotta Gun (Spooks Gotta Gun x Miss Cutter Senbar x Cutter Bill), owned by Mary Ann Jansma, of Tioga, Texas, to the Level 3 Open Championship in the Wimpys Little Step and Gordyville Breeders Cup derbies. They also received the Gordyville Breeders Cup Level 4 Open Reserve Championship and tied for the Wimpys Little Step Derby Level 4 Open Reserve Championship.

DeFrang is survived by his wife, Jessica; two sons, Spencer and Braylen DeFrang; two daughters, Ella and Aubrey DeFrang; his parents James and Rita DeFrang; one sister, Michelle (Brent) McNallan, of Plainview, Minnesota; two brothers, Daniel (Anne) DeFrang, of New Port, Minnesota, and Brian (Tami) DeFrang, of Eyota, Minnesota. He is preceded in death by his grandparents.

There will be a funeral mass on Tuesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Zumbrota with Father Randal Kasel officiating. A visitation for family and friends will be held Monday, April 27, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes and again one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Zumbrota Cemetery.
