One of the perks of interviewing so many people about their horses is learning about barn names, and where they came from. Many of the stories that accompany these nicknames are as unique as the names themselves.
While interviewing Kaitlyn Wimberly at January’s Augusta Futurity and Classic, I just had to inquire about her mount’s registered name. It was simple. One word. Kat.
Kaitlyn told me, “I couldn’t believe it hadn’t been done before. My mom [Kris Martin] is all about those little one-word names.”
But with a three-letter registered name, I couldn’t wait to hear the 4-year-old mare’s barn name. It turned out to be twice as long – Fluffy.
“If you notice, her mane and tail are very fluffy, and trust me, she has a fluffy personality!” Kaitlyn said with a laugh.
My fellow writers and I really do love hearing the great stories that go along with horses’ names. If you have a tale you’d like to share with us, email it to [email protected]
