$225,000 highest seller Buena SpookThe National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Markel Insurance Futurity Sales were held Dec. 4-6 in Oklahoma City during the NRHA Futurity. Reining enthusiasts packed the sale arena each day, with the highest seller coming from the Futurity Prospect Sale on Dec. 5.
Consigned by Prospects Unlimited LLC, Buena Spook hammered down at $225,000, with Geir and Jill Ramleth signing the ticket on the 2012 mare. Sired by Smart Spook, Buena Spook is a full sister to 2008 stallion Spooks Eclipse, an earner of $81,330, according to Equi-Stat. Spooks Eclipse was the 2012 Cowboy Capital Classic Derby Levels 3 and 2 Open Champion, the 2012 National Reining Breeders Classic Levels 2 and 1 Open Champion and Level 3 Reserve.
Buena Spook’s dam, Chex Drive (Bueno Chexinic x Buco Little Bit x Bucolena), finished in the top 5 in the 2003 Canadian Reining Breeders Classic Futurity Open and 2003 NRHA Futurity Level 2 Open. She has offspring earnings of more than $95,000 with three performers to date.
The second-highest seller at $220,000 was Xtra Voodoo Doc (Shiners Voodoo Dr x Call Me Miss Hickory x Doc’s Hickory), a 2012 colt consigned by Xtra Quarter Horses and purchased by Roger Parks. Xtra Voodoo Doc is from the first crop of Shiners Voodoo Dr, the 2012 NRHA Derby Level 4 Open Co-Reserve Champion. His dam, Call Me Miss Hickory, is from a productive cutting line that traces to No. 9 Equi-Stat Lifetime Cutting Dam Lynx Melody.
The Ramleths also bought the third-highest seller, Crystalized Gunner, for $210,000. Garth Brown, Agent, consigned the 2012 palomino colt (Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner] x Shiners Crystal x Shining Spark), who sold during the Futurity Prospects Sale. Crystalized Gunner is a half-brother to 2001 stallion Chic Magnetic, an earner of $139,507 sired by Chocolate Chic Olena.
The fourth-highest seller overall topped the Select Yearling Sale at $112,000. Pearlly Pistols (Gunner x Pearlly Handles x Gun Start) was consigned by Darling 888 Ranch and sold to Andrew Fox, Agent. Just 10 lots earlier, her full brother Canyahandletheseguns sold for $50,000. Pearlly Handles earned more than $20,000 in the show ring and has offspring earnings of more than $81,000, according to Equi-Stat. Her top earner is 2003 stallion Gunball Machine (x Gunner), who has earned more than $54,773.
The NRHA Markel Insurance Futurity Sales kicked off with the Marketplace Sale, where HF Dirtsurfer received the highest bid of $23,000. Heritage Farms consigned the 2013 red dun colt (Jerry Lees Surprise x Dun It With Flair x Smart Like Juice), who sold to Ted Kuczynski.
