Xtra Electric Meter & Craig Schmersal Top Congress Futurity Open Reining

As the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Level 4 Open finals came to a close, it was Xtra Electric Meter and Craig Schmersal, of Overbrook, Okla., who secured the championship with their score of 229 to win $31,378.

Schmersal and Xtra Electric Meter (Jacs Electric Spark x Metermaid To Order x Doc O’Lena) seem to have a good thing going, as this was the duo’s second big win. They also took the championship at July’s Rocky Mountain Reining Horse Association Summer Slide Futurity in Denver, Colo., after scoring a 225 in the Futurity Level 4 Open. Along with winning $6,131 after their finals run, they also grabbed a win in the Futurity Level 4 Open Stallion Stakes, garnering an additional $6,835.

The 2011 stallion, owned by Eric Unger, of Bernville, Pa., bred by Cinder Lakes Ranch, of Valley View, Texas, now boasts an Equi-Stat record of $13,104, making him the fourth-highest money-earner out of Metermaid To Order.

Shawn Flarida and Wood Be Vintage (Hollywood Vintage x Abbie Be Tuff x Lil Ruf Peppy), owned by Miguel Petty and Margarita Arietti, of Paraguay, and bred by Solum and Solum LLC, of Lamar, Mo., took the Futurity Level 4 Open Reserve Championship with their score of 227.5, earning a $19,200 paycheck.

Futurity Level 3 Open

FM Shine N Tag Chex and Kole Price, of Wyanett, Ill., scored a 222, to top the Futurity Level 3 Open and earn $12,650 for owners Mike and Tricia Jaeger, of Charles City, Iowa.

FM Shine N Tag Chex (Whiz N Tag Chex x Shine With Wanda x Shining Spark) was bred by Ann Ramsay and Carol Rose, of Gainesville, Texas.

Futurity Level 2 Open

Chex For Spark and Brandon Brant, of London, Ohio, won the Futurity Level 2 Open with their score of 220.5, earning $3,783 for owner O&W Performance Horses LLC, of Ashland, Ky.

Chex For Spark (Jacs Electric Spark x Snip O Chex x Nu Chex To Cash) was bred by Cinder Lakes Ranch LLC and is the third-highest money-earner, with total earnings of $4,392, for his dam Snip O Chex, who has an $85,679 offspring record.

Futurity Prime Time Open

Casey Hinton, of Whitesboro, Texas, piloted his own horse Jimmy Jac (Tinsel Jac x Miss Bueno Catalyst x Taris Catalyst) to a win in the Futurity Prime Time Open with a score of 220, garnering a check worth $1,339.

The 2011 gelding was bred by Zachary Gregg, of Whitesboro, Texas. Jimmy Jac is Miss Bueno Catalyst’s second money-earning offspring, giving her a total of $10,490 in offspring earnings.

Stakes Level 4 Non-Pro

Charlie Wiederholt piloted his horse Hes A Golden Gun to victory in the Stakes Level 4 Non-Pro and took home $9,589 with their score of 219.5. They also took home the Stakes Prime Time Non-Pro title, worth an additional $1,090.

Hes A Golden Gun (Hes A Loaded Gun x Spooks Golden Girl x Grays Starlight) was bred by Mary Jansma, of Tioga, Texas. The 3-year-old gelding is one of eight money-earning offspring out of Spooks Golden Girl, whose offspring earnings total more than $25,000.

Stakes Level 3 Non-Pro

Lisa Bissell, of Fort Valley, Ga., and You Rider (Lil Ruf Rider x Double My Quixote x Double R Doc), bred and owned by Jamie Bissell, scored a 217.5 to win the Stakes Level 3 Non-Pro and a $4,930 paycheck.

Stakes Level 2 Non-Pro

Brenna O’Connor, of Ellsworth, Wis., rode Dun It Like A Legend to win the Stakes Level 2 Non-Pro. The duo’s 215 earned $1,686 for owner Nathan O’Connor.

Dun It Like A Legend (Custom Legend x Dun It In Panties x Hollywood Dun It) was bred by Lawrence Coss, of River Falls, Wis. The 3-year-old gelding is one of three money-earning offspring out of Dun It In Panties.

Freestyle Reining

Everyone enjoys watching the freestyle portion of reining competitions, and at the All American Quarter Horse Congress, the runs were nothing short of exciting.

Dan James, of Stephenville, Texas, piloted his 13-year-old horse Smart Little Elan to win the Freestyle Open, presented by Weaver Leather, with a score of 229 that earned $7,731. Smart Little Elan (Elans Playboy x Smart Little Trouble x Smart Little Lena), bred by Jim Babcock, of Valley View, Texas, has total earnings of more than $30,000, according to Equi-Stat records.

Securing the Freestyle Non-Pro Championship, and a $1,244 check, with an incredible score of 230.5 was Emily Fisher, of Rushville, Ohio, riding her 8-year-old gelding Whiz Bye Gollie. Whiz Bye Gollie (Whizard Jac x Sugarbars Dondee x Don Dorio) was bred by William and Penny Gesel, of Canal Winchester, Ohio.
