Gary Gonsalves Wins Twice At El Rancho Futurity

swanky-smartSwanky Smart and Gary Gonsalves fared well at the Idaho Futurity (pictured) before winning the El Rancho Futurity Open.The El Rancho Futurity & Foothill Fiesta was held Sept. 12-20 in Rancho Murieta, Calif. Swanky Smart (High Brow CD x Spookys Smarty Pants x Smart Aristocrat) carried Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Rider Gary Gonsalves to the El Rancho Futurity Open Championship, marking a 224 and grabbing a check for $12,000.

The win came on the heels of a reserve championship in the Idaho Futurity Open. The 2011 mare, bred owned by Iron Rose Ranch, of Carbondale, Colo., is a half-sister to six money-earners including Spookys Smarty Rey ($69,067) and One Time Smarty ($25,633), according to Equi-Stat. In two shows, she has already banked $22,600.

Futurity Open Reserve Champions Metallic 007 (Metallic Cat x Missin Bunny x Miss N Cash) and Steve Schlesinger pocketed $10,000 for their finals score of 222. This check will be added to the gelding’s prior earnings of $6,570.

Gonsalves also won the Classic/Challenge Open with WR Jillaroo (WR This Cats Smart x Oaks Smart Peach x Doc’s Oak), owned by his Double G Cutting Horses, of Millsap, Texas. The duo outscored the rest with a 225 in the finals after marking a cumulative score of 443 in the go rounds.

According to Equi-Stat, WR Jillaroo had lifetime earnings of $102,496 prior to the El Rancho Futurity. With Gonsalves, the mare has been a multiple Open aged event finalist, including finishing as the Classic/Challenge Open Reserve Champion at the 2013 Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association (PCCHA) Futurity. Gonsalves’ wife, Jessica, has also ridden the mare successfully in the Non-Pro.

Equi-Stat Elite $2 Million Rider Todd Bimat, of Orland, Calif., earned the Reserve Championship with a 223.5 riding Dox Pepto 095 (Sweet Lil Pepto x Dox King Becky 095 x King Peppy San), owned by Michael Surratt, of Reno, Nev. Prior to this show, Dox Pepto 095 has career earnings of $58,377, all of which has been acquired under Bimat’s saddle.

Metallic Pepto (Metallic Cat x Pep Up Tari x Peponita), owned by Aaron and Katie Wright, carried Eric Wisehart to the Futurity Intermediate Open Championship with a score of 222, winning by a four-point margin. The duo earned $4,000 at this year’s El Rancho Futurity, which will be the first check posted to Equi-Stat for Metallic Pepto.

Tom Diaz rode Whiskey In A Jar (Metallic Cat x Smart Little Pepto x Peptoboonsmal) to capture the Reserve title with a 218. The 3-year-old mare has already posted two checks to Equi-Stat from the South Point Futurity, where she won the Non-Pro and Limited Non-Pro with her owner, Emily Jones, in the saddle.

Derby Open

Rock Hedlund and Meteles Cat (Metallic Cat x Teles Lies x Lenas Telesis) won the Derby Open Championship and a check for $11,300 with a finals score of 225.5. Meteles Cat, owned by Hedlund’s son, Cody, of Weatherford, Texas, had lifetime earnings of $92,264 this win. Cody rode the stallion to reserve championships in the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Super Stakes Non-Pro and Breeder’s Invitational Non-Pro earlier this year and made the Non-Pro finals at the 2014 NCHA Summer Spectacular and 2013 NCHA Futurity.

Jaime Snider, of Lipan, Texas, rode GS Puddys Boonsmal (Peptoboonsmal x Puddy Tap x High Brow Cat), owned by Rocking L Cutting of Boca Raton, Fla., to the Derby Open Reserve Championship with a score of 224.5.

Non-Pro

Eddie Patterson and All Reys A Lefty (Reys Dual Badger x Playin Delite x Playin Stylish) marked a 216 to win the Futurity Non-Pro Championship and $5,200 at the El Rancho Futurity, which was the their first event together. All Reys A Lefty has posted one other check to Equi-Stat, finishing fourth in the South Point Futurity Open with trainer Russ Westfall.

Melissa Weis’ Metallic Tears (Metallic Cat x Royal Dandy Rey x Dual Rey) carried her to a score of 212 and the Futurity Non-Pro Reserve title. Weis, of Ojai, Calif., now has an Equi-Stat record of more than $70,000.

Brandon Dufurrena and his homebred mare Purple Reyn (Metallic Cat x Miss Ella Rey x Dual Rey) won the Derby Non-Pro by a spectacular five-point margin. Purple Reyn is out of Miss Ella Rey (Dual Rey x Huggs Olena x Smart Chic Olena), a mare also owned by Dufurrena and shown by both he and his father, Ed.

Earlier this year, Dufurrena and Purple Reyn won the PCCHA Derby Non-Pro, were Derby Non-Pro Reserve Champions at the Arbuckle Mountain Futurity and finished third in the NCHA Super Stakes 4-Year-Old Non-Pro. The mare has earnings of $82,184, not including her El Rancho earnings.

Checkers Live Oak (Im Countin Checks x Cats Live Oak x High Brow Cat) carried owner Stuart Bozeman to the Derby Non-Pro Reserve Championship. The duo marked a 217 and pocketed a check for $4,000. Bozeman has crossed disciplines with the mare, amassing an Equi-Stat record of $22,917 in cutting, reined cow horse and ranch versatility.

Janet Westfall and Just As Reckless (CD Royal x Trouble Lynn 495 x Smart And Trouble) followed up their PCCHA Classic/Challenge Non-Pro Championship with a 221-point run and the El Rancho Classic/Challenge Non-Pro Championship. Prior to this show, Just As Reckless $150,000 threshold, according to Equi-Stat. Westfall and her husband, Russ, bred and own Just As Reckless, and Russ has shown the mare successfully in the Open.

Weatherford, Texas cutter Constance Jaeggi piloted SVR Reys Smart Chic (Dual Smart Rey x Meleena Olena x Smart Chic Olena) to a Classic/Challenge Non-Pro Reserve title. The 5-year-old mare, owned by J Five Horse Ranch LLC, and Jaeggi won the Classic/Challenge Novice Non-Pro at the PCCHA Derby earlier this year.

Amateur

After taking the Futurity Non-Pro Championship, Eddie Patterson and All Reys A Lefty followed it up with a win in the Futurity Amateur , marking a 218 and outscoring their opponents by a four-point margin. The owner/rider from Springville, Calif. pocketed another check, this time for $1,400.

Amber Charter and Lay Down The Boogie (Smooth As A Cat x Fancy Lena Dual x Dual Pep) secured the Futurity Amateur Reserve title, scoring a 212 and pocketing $1,250. The gelding’s El Rancho winnings will bring his total earnings to $3,390. He was previously an Open finalist at the South Point Futurity under Tom Diaz.

The eight finalists in the 2014 El Rancho Derby Amateur finals competed for a share of the $9,070 purse, but there would be three ties when the last rider exited the arena. Co-Champions Jill Roth and Amanda Bettencourt both marked a 216 to win $1,500 each.

Roth rode her gelding, I Like It This Rey (Dual Rey x Roosters Chicaroo x Galla De Cielo), who was the 2013 El Rancho Futurity Unlimited Amateur Reserve Champion with previous owner Jo Anne Carollo. According to Equi-Stat, I Like It This Rey has lifetime earnings of $35,678 not including this win.

Look At This Kitty (WR This Cats Smart x Jasons Little Pepto x Peptoboonsmal) carried Amanda Bettencourt, of Gilroy, Calif., to earn $1,500 and the Derby Amateur Co-Championship. This year alone, Bettencourt and Look At This Kitty have earned $5,452.

CR Mr Pepto Oak (Peptos Stylish Oak x CR Miss N Cats Meow x Miss N Okie) , ridden and owned by Paula Peterson, and One Precious Pepto (Peptoboonsmal x Lenas Good Nus x Lenas Jewel Bars), ridden and owned by Stephen Silva, both marked a 214 to split third and fourth. Both horse-and-rider teams pocketed a check for $1,175.

With a score of 222, Tracey Teixeira and her 2009 mare Absolut Pepto (Peptoboonsmal x Absolutely Stunning x Smart Little Lena) won the Classic/Challenge Amateur and pocketed $1,700. Earlier this year, they won the 5/6-Year-Old Amateur at the South Point Futurity. Last year, T.J. Good showed the mare for previous owner JLC Performance Horses LLC, amassing $8,376. Absolut Pepto now has an Equi-Stat record of $16,183.

Catisfaction, piloted by Lauren Cooper, of Shingle Springs, Calif., marked a 217 to capture the Classic/Challenge Amateur Reserve Championship and a check for $1,550. The 2009 gelding (WR This Cats Smart x Ragtime CD x CD Olena) has posted earnings of $3,383 in Equi-Stat.

Unlimited Amateur

Scott Gaddy, of Clements, Calif., piloted One Time Traveler (One Time Pepto x Travelocity x Travalena) to the team’s second El Rancho win. In 2013, the duo won the Futurity Unlimited Amateur. One year older, the mare carried Gaddy to a score of 216 and a Derby Unlimited Amateur Championship. After this win’s $2,000 check, One Time Traveler’s total earnings jump to $8,524.

Pat Bello and Harley Starlight (Halreycious x Prowlin By Starlight x High Brow Cat) marked a 213 in the finals to earn the Derby Unlimited Amateur Reserve title. Their 2014 El Rancho check for $1,750 will be added to Harley Starlight’s 2014 total earnings of $14,442.

Charles Blackburn, of Lodi, Calif., and Catamini (High Brow Cat x Spookys Cash x Miss N Cash), owned by Trinity Land and Livestock, marked a 222 in the Classic/Challenge Unlimited Amateur finals to win the event and pocket a check worth $1,800. After placing fourth in this year’s PCCHA Holy Cow Performance Horses Winter Roundup Amateur, the duo has 2014 earnings of $2,900.

Jo Anne Carollo rode her 2008 mare What A Rey (TR Dual Rey x Roosters Chaicaroo x Gallo Del Cielo) to the Reserve title in the Classic/Challenge Unlimited Amateur. The pair marked a 219.5 and grabbed a check for $1,600. At the 2014 National Cutting Horse Assoctiation (NCHA) Super Stakes, Carollo and What A Rey pocketed $21,711 in the Classic/Challenge Non-Pro, Limited Non-Pro and Unlimited Amateur.
