Flarida Wins Florida Classic

shawnflarida0314Shawn Flarida was all smiles after winning the Florida Derby Open on Yankee Gun..On the evening of March 1, Yankee Gun (Rowdy Yankee x Snow Gun x Gunner), ridden by Equi-Stat Elite $5 Million Rider Shawn Flarida for Arcese Quarter Horses USA, of Weatherford, Texas, scored a 234 to win the $20,000-added FRHA Florida Classic Derby Open.

The Florida Classic, held Feb. 23-March 1 at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, Fla., was hosted by the Florida Reining Horse Association. Flarida’s ride was a picture perfect ending to a week of awesome competition.

This team earned $6,948 for the win. “Yankee Gun was just great,” Flarida said.

As Reserve Champion, Spookynic (Spooks Gotta Gun x Litanic x Reminic), ridden by Dean Brown for Bob Santagata and Arlene Bedross, of Campbell Hall, N.Y, earned $5,879. Their score of 227.5 also earned the $7,000-added Level 3 Open Championship and $3,561.

There were Co-Champions in the $5,000-added Level 2 Open. HA The Looney Tune (Im Chairman x HA Chic A Tune x Smart Chic Olena) ridden by Josieane Gauthier for Fauntly Garrido, of Lucama, N.C. and Wallawalla Bangbang (Gunner x Shiney Walla Wanda x Shining Spark), ridden by Brandon Brant for Joe Wolfe, of Catlettsburg, Ky., both scored a 226.5 that earned $2,203. They also tied for third in the Level 4 Open and were Reserve Champions in the Level 3.

Chics Dig Scars (Smart Chic Olena x Princess In Diamonds x Shining Spark), ridden by Wes Holmes for McGee Farms, of King, N.C. scored a 223 to win the $2,000-added Level 1 Open and $1,052.


shannonrafacz0214Shannon Rafacz won Levels 4 and 3 in the Non-Pro division riding Lenas Whizabelle.The Non-Pro Florida Classic Derby was held on Feb. 28. Shannon Rafacz, of Citra, Fla., riding her Lenas Whizabelle (West Coast Whiz x Sugarmans Belle x Lenas Sugarman) scored a 223.5 to win the $12,500-added Level 4 and $7,000-added Level 3 divisions. Rafacz earned $8,938 for the double win.

Veronica Lentini, of Tioga, Texas, scored a 220.5 on her Electrinicki (Jacs Electric Spark x Chexanicki x Bueno Chexinic) to earn wins in the $5,000-added Level 2 and $2,000-added Level 1 divisions. Lentini earned a total of $3,654.

Lisa Bissell, of Ft. Valley, Ga., riding Jamie Bissell’s Double My Chics (Dreamn Bout Chics x Double My Quixote x Double R Doc) scored a 222.5 for the Levels 4 and 3 Reserve Championships and the $1,000-added Prime Time Championship. Bissell earned a total of $7,567 for her one ride.

Vic Gilson, Bridgeton, N.J., riding his Lil Ruf Redneck (Lil Ruf Rider x Ms Red Capri x Jacs Aledo Bar) scored a 212 to win the $1,000-added Masters Non-Pro. Gilson won $647. Tucker Lane earned the $500-added Youth Championship on Gunner Gump (Gunner x Little Patrasha Gump x Little Gump) owned by his father, Bundy Lane, of Gates, N.C. Tucker scored a score of 218 and earned $261.
