San Antonio Stock Show Awards $30,000 In Youth Scholarships

marleywoodMarley Wood (center) won a $10,000 scholarship at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo • Dan Trout photoThe National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) cutting show is one of the biggest horse events the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo hosts each year. Held in the Expo Hall, cutters tried for their share of $67,000 in added money. Texas youth also competed for a total of $30,000 in scholarships. These scholarships were awarded to the top three average scores out of the two Senior Youth classes combined. The scholarships were presented Feb. 9 to Marley Wood, of Stephenville, Texas; Bailey Reina, of Wharton, Texas; and Tyler Johnson, of Granbury, Texas.

With a total combined score of 294 from both rides, Wood rode Pepto Boom to a $10,000 scholarship for first place. Wood wanted to give a special thanks to her older sister, Doris Lane, for letting her show Pepto Boom. She is a sophomore at Stephenville High School and plans to attend Baylor University to study engineering.

baileyreinaBailey Reina and Cats Royal Jewel • Dan Trout photoRiding Cats Royal Jewel, Reina received a combined score of 293, securing her second place and earning her a $10,000 scholarship. Reina is no stranger to winning as she has previously won the Texas State High School Rodeo Finals. As a junior in high school, she is very active in rodeo and softball. Reina plans to attend Sam Houston State University to participate in equine chiropractic studies.

The third-place recipient was Tyler Johnson riding Swingins Lucky Mate. Farris won a $10,000 scholarship with his combined score of 290. Johnson stated, “This means everything to me to be able to ride and show at a place as exciting and fun as this.” Johnson is excited to graduate high school in the spring and study animal science at Tarleton State University.tylerjohnsonTyler Johnson and Swingin Luckys Mate • Dan Trout photo
