Newest Adequan NAAC Champions Crowned

TheWhizWay SArcherThe Whiz Way & Stephen Archer • Photo by WaltenberryThe National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) hosts the Adequan North American Affiliate Championships (NAAC) each year during the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City. The championships are for NRHA members and horses that have qualified through their respective Regional Affiliate Finals. Each finals sends its eight highest-placing riders, plus ties, to the Adequan NAAC to compete for North American bragging rights.

The Whiz Way and Stephen Archer – Open Champions

South Central region representatives The Whiz Way (Topsail Whiz x Dun It The Hard Way) and NRHA Professional Stephen Archer marked a staggering 223 to take the Championship in the Adequan NAAC Open class. The 2002 gelding, who has earned more than $45,000 in NRHA competition, is owned by Candace Rodriguez of Richmond, Texas.

The South Central region’s Wimpys Lil Hollywood, owned by Christine Harbach, of Spring Branch, Texas, and NRHA Professional Todd Martin took Reserve honors with a 221.5. Wimpys Lil Hollywood, who has earned more than $23,000, is by Wimpys Little Step and out of the Topsail Whiz mare Miss Hollywood Whiz.

Load Your Gun and David Hanson – Intermediate Open Champions

The Northwest region was represented well with Load Your Gun (Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner] x Jo Ell Smoke) and NRHA Professional David Hanson, of Clements, Calif. The talented pair earned a 220 from the judges and the Championship title in the Adequan NAAC Intermediate Open. Giselle Turchet owns the 2007 gelding.

The Reserve Championship was earned by NRHA Professional Matthew McDowell, of Enterprise, Ore., riding Miss Silver Gun (Gunner x Miss Taris Rey) with a score of 219.5. Tamarack Ranch LLC’s mare who represented the Northwest region has earned more than $78,000 in her NRHA career.

Starbucks Jazz and  Tell Edgmon – Limited Open Champions

South Central region representatives Starbucks Jazz (Smart Starbuck x Flipped Out Jazz, $115,000 NRHA LTE) and Tell Edgmon, Elmore City, Okla., had a fantastic run that not only earned them a 221.5 from the judges but also the Championship in the Adequan NAAC Limited Open. The 2003 stallion is owned by Whitney Conrad, of Weatherford, Texas.

The North Central region’s Roosta, owned by John Anderson, of Plainview, Neb., and Serena Siebrandt, of Clarkson, Neb., won the Reserve Championship with a 214.5. The 2008 gelding is by Gallo Del Cielo and out of the Smart Chic Olena mare Shes One Smart Chic.

Hershey Spark and Brian Welman – Novice Horse Open Level 2


Hershey Spark (Lena Spark x Si Hershey Bar) and NRHA Professional Brian Welman earned the Championship in the NAAC Novice Horse Open Level 2 with a 219. The 2007 gelding has over $11,000 LTE with NRHA and is owned by Becki Lee Mastin, of Lakeville, Minn.

The South Central region’s Custom Whiz Kid, owned by David & Joy Buck, and Carlos Deleu took home the Reserve Championship with a score of 217. The 2008 stallion is sired by Custom Crome and is out of the Topsail Whiz mare Dude Lady Whiz.

Karl With A K and Brent Naylor – Novice Horse Open Level 1


Karl With a K (Like A Diamond x Gunners Sureshot) and NRHA Professional Brent Naylor, of Cave Creek, Ariz., represented the Southwest region well, scoring a 218 to win the NAAC Novice Horse Open Level 1. The 2009 gelding is owned by Top Fuel, LLC in Cave Creek, Ariz.

The North Central region’s Wimpys King Lad and Seth Chamberlain, of Stamford, Neb., tied with Italian Revolution (Einsteins Revolution x Chic Lil Ruby) and Tom Foran, of Burbank, Calif., for the Reserve Co-Championship with matching scores of 214.5.

Wimpys King Lad (Wimpys Little Step x King Tucks Lassie) is owned by Robert & Robbin Thayn of Oxford, Nebraska. Rex Ross, of Summerland, Calif., owns Italian Revolution that represented the Southwest region.

Madison Bohman and Tuff Little Surprise – Non-Pro and Intermediate Non-Pro Champions

TuffLittleSurprise BohmanTuff Little Surprise & Madison Bohman • Photo by WaltenberryMadison Bohman, of Morgan, Utah, and Tuff Little Surprise (Jerry Lees Surprise x Tuff Susie Fizz) represented the Mountain region well, scoring a 217.5 to take home the titles of Adequan NAAC Non-Pro Champion and Adequan NAAC Intermediate Non-Pro Champion. The gelding is owned by Glenda Bohman.

The Mountain region’s Game Day Surprise (Hang Ten Surprize x Dunit N Continental) and owner/rider Sharee Schwartzenberger, of Meade, Colo., received a 217 from the judges and took home the title of Adequan NAAC Non-Pro Reserve Champion.

The Reserve Championship in the Adequan NAAC Intermediate Non-Pro was earned by Make It With A Twist (Dun It With A Twist x SR Mischief Maker) and Sandra Bentien, of Auburn, Calif. The pair represented the Northwest region and scored a 214.5 to earn the title.

Kaylan Marks and Tagged My Chic – Limited Non-Pro Champions

South Central region representatives Tagged My Chic (Whiz N Tag Chex x Cheeky Boom) and NRHA Youth member Kaylan Marks, of Yorktown, Texas, had a spectacular run that not only earned them a 218 from the judges but also the Championship in the Adequan NAAC Limited Non-Pro class. The 2007 mare, who has earned more than $19,500, is also owned by Marks.

The Western Canada region’s Jumpin Jac Trash (Trashadeous x Sail Away Rene, $16,200 NRHA LTE) and owner/rider Madison Steed, of Cochrane, Alberta, Canada, took home the Reserve Championship with a score of 217.5.

Kay Gould and Sweet Pepto Nic – Prime Time Non-Pro Champions

Sweet Pepto Nic (Sweet Lil Pepto x Nics Whiz) and owner/rider Kay Gould, of Greer, S.C., did a fantastic job representing the East Central region, scoring a 212 to win the Adequan NAAC Prime Time Non-Pro Championship.

The Southest region’s Sail On Kuna Whiz and owner/rider Suzanne De Champlain, of Reddick, Fla., earned the Reserve Champioship with a score of 211.5. The 2007 gelding is sired by Topsail Whiz and is out of the Shining Spark mare Shining Maid.

Game Day Surprise and Sharee Schwartzenberger – Novice Horse Non-Pro Level 2 Champions


Mountain region’s 2008 gelding, Game Day Surprise (Hang Ten Surprize x Dunit N Continental), won the Championship after scoring a 216.5 with owner and rider Sharee Schwartzenberger, of Meade, Colo. Game Day Surprise has over $16,500 lifetime earnings with NRHA.

The Reserve Co-Championship was earned with a 214: Hickorys Baylite ridden by Shedlauskas and Custom Crackerjac (Custom Crome x One Dumb Blonde) ridden and owned by Kimberly Tillman (Whitehall, Md.). Tillman and her mare ($36,500 NRHA LTE) represented the Northeast region.

Hickorys Baylite and Karen Shedlauskas – Novice Horse Non-Pro Level 1 Champions


The Northeast region was well represented by Hickorys Baylite (Hickory Chic Olena x Lucky Baylite) and Karen Shedlauskas, of Austintown, Ohio. The pair marked a 214 to take home the Championship in the Adequan NAAC Novice Horse Non-Pro Level 1 class. The 2009 stallion has over $11,900 NRHA LTE and is owned by Shedlauskas.

The Northeast region’s Pic A Remedy (Chickoree Dox x Bopinic) and owner/rider Daniele Whitney, of Northfield, Mass., took home the Reserve Championship with a score of 212.5.

West Coast Beach Boy and Michelle Chapman – Rookie Pro Champions

The Mountain region was represented well with West Coast Beach Boy (West Coast Whiz x Reminics Command) and Michelle Chapman, of Eaton, Col. The pair competed in a run-off with Amanda Yarbrough and A Bingo Chic after both entries marked a 212.5. In the run-off, they scored a 214.5 to win the Adequan NAAC Rookie Pro Championship. Barn 66 LLC, of Lafayette, Colo., owns the 2008 gelding.

The Reserve Championship went to Yarbrough, of Campbell Hall, N.Y., and A Bingo Chic (Itsa Bingo Greyhound x Chics Oh Rosa) after they marked a 212 in the run-off. Robert Santagata, of Campbell Hall, owns the 2008 stallion.

Lauren Crivelli and Rebas Best Step Yet – Silver Spurs Equine Rookie of the Year

Rebas Best Step Yet, a 2009 stallion, sired by Wimpys Little Step and out of the Grays Starlight mare Starlights Reba and rider Lauren Crivelli, of Visalia, Calif., scored a 214 in the run-off to win the title. Rebas Best Step Yet is owned by Jeff Crivelli.

The Reserve Championship went to the Mountain region’s West Coast Beach Boy (West Coast Whiz x Reminics Command) and Sally Berg, of Lafayette, Colo., who scored a 212 in the run-off. The 2008 gelding is owned by Barn 66 LLC.

Jack Medows / Ruf Tuf Whiz & Madison Bohman / Tuff Little Surprise –  14-18 Co-Champions

After a tie in the class and the run-off, Co-Champions were crowned in the Adequan NAAC Youth 14-18 class: Ruf Tuf Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Lil Ruf N Trouble) and owner/rider Jack Medows, of Cuba, Mo., representing the South Central region and Madison Bohman and Tuff Little Surprise (Jerry Lees Surprise x Tuff Susie Fizz) representing the Mountain region. Tuff Little Surprise is owned by Glenda Bohman.

Shining Shoes (Shining Spark x Miss War Doc) and the South Central region’s James Michael Philips, of Hartshorne, Okla., received the Reserve Championship in the Adequan NAAC Youth 14-18 class. The 1995 gelding is owned by Michael and Carolyn Phillips.

Kaitlyn Nagy and Starbucks Freckle – Youth 13 & Under Champions

Starbucks Freckle (Smart Starbuck x Justa Spring Freckle) and owner/rider Kaitlyn Nagy, of Peace River, Alberta, Canada, obtained the win in the Adequan NAAC Youth 13 & Under class with a scorching 215. The team represented Western Canada.

The Reserve Championship was earned by Rollin Back Rawhide (Dunit Rawhide x Solo Poco Solano) and Charlize Zuraek, of Los Altos Hills, Calif., with a 213.5 for the Northwest region. Jake Cagle owns the 1997 gelding.
