The $75,000-added National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Open World Championship Shootout brought some of the best reining horses around to the NRHA Futurity & Adequan North American Affiliate Championship (NAAC) Show in Oklahoma City on Dec. 5.
Entries at the event were earners of more than $1.7 million (cumulatively). The draw was impressive, boasting 2013 NRHA Open World Championship contenders, a past NRHA Derby Open Champion, past Shootout Champions and a past NRHA European Futurity Level 3 Open Champion.
After a thrilling performance stacked full of high scores, the Shootout ended with a top score of 224.5, turned in by Colonels Smart Spook (Smart Spook x Colonels Cattin Gun) and NRHA Million Dollar Rider Jordan Larson, of Whitesboro, Texas. Sally Amabile’s stallion earned a check for $20,850 to add to his current $24,000 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings. Larson and Colonels Smart Spook won the 2012 Darling 888 Ranch Derby Open and was a 2012 NRHA Derby finalist.
Two entries marked a 224 to tie for the Reserve Championship: Custom Cash Advance (Custom Crome x Cash In Roan), ridden by Larson, owned by Luga, LLC, and Smoking Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Glendas A Smokingun), ridden by NRHA Million Dollar Rider Andrea Fappani, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and owned by Silver Spurs Equine, of Cave Creek, Ariz. Both horses took home a check worth $13,760.
With the Shootout in the books, Nu Chexomatic, owned by Jac Point QH and shown by Cody Sapergia, is the 2013 NRHA Open World Champion.
