National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity, one of the most highly anticipated events each year for reiners and reining fans, begins in Oklahoma City. Among the world-class events to take place this year is the NRHA Open World Championship Shootout. The $75,000-added class, to be held Thursday, Dec. 5, will play a major role in determining the 2013 NRHA Open World Champions. Last year’s co-champion, Scottsdale, Ariz.-based trainer Andrea Fappani, is set to return this year with Shiners Chic (Smart Chic Olena x Ebony Shines x Shining Spark), owned by Rosanne Sternberg, of Aubrey, Texas. Fappani and the 2005 gelding shared the 2012 Shootout Championship with Bernard Fonck, of Italy, and Sail On Top Whizard (Whizard Jac x Miss N Sis x Miss N Cash). Sail On Top Whizard’s co-championship winnings helped him secure the 2012 NRHA Open World Championship.
Fappani, an Equi-Stat Elite $3 Million Rider, will also be coming to the arena armed with Silver Spur Equine’s Smoking Whiz (Topsail Whiz x Glendas A Smokingun x Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner]) and Tinker With Guns, owned by Rancho Oso Rio, of Scottsdale, Ariz.
Aboard Smoking Whiz, Fappani landed the Reining By The Bay (RBB) Derby Level 4 Open Reserve Championship in July, the 2012 RBB Derby Level 4 Open Championship, as well as the High Roller Reining Classic Derby Level 4 Open title. Fappani has seen equal amounts of success riding Tinker With Guns (Gunner x Tinker Nic x Reminic). Their accomplishments in 2012 include winning the Cactus Reining Classic Level 4 Open Championship, along with reserve wins at the National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) and the NRHA Derby.
Italian trainer Franco Bertolani could have two strong contenders in CFR Centenario Wimpy and Nu Chex Star. Bertolani, who boasts an Equi-Stat record of more than $240,500, rode CFR Centenario Wimpy (Wimpys Little Step x Miss Hollywood Whiz x Topsail Whiz), owned by Domenico Lomuto, of Italy, to numerous championships this year. They won the NRHA Derby Level 3 Open, and took the Levels 4 and 3 Championships at the High Roller Reining Classic. Nu Chex Star (Nu Chex To Cash x Aleena Starlight x Grays Starlight), owned by Bevilacqua Quarter Horses, of Aubrey, Texas, carried Bertolani to win the 2013 Ariat Tulsa Reining Classic CRI.
Jason Vanlandingham, of Whitesboro, Texas, and A Smokin Whiz (Topsail Whiz x PF Nu Miss Royal RSK x Royal Silver King) enter the Shootout on the strength of a runner-up finish in the Level 4 Open at the NRHA Derby this year. The 2008 stallion, owned by Sunrise Ranch LLC, of Fayetteville, Ark., missing taking the championship by a half-point. He also carried Vanlandingham to win the 2011 NRHA Futurity Level 3 Open. Vanlandingham has an Equi-Stat record of more than $606,000.
A total of 17 horses are on the preliminary entry list for the Shootout, which is one of the highest added-money classes in the reining sport. The Shootout will be held as a ticketed event. General admission tickets will be priced at $11, and box seats will be priced at $16.
