Elizabeth and Skip Queen Lil Sting Rey, a 6-year-old gelding co-owned by trainer Skip Queen and his wife, Elizabeth, of Allendale, S.C., carried Skip to a 222 and a Classic/Challenge Open win worth $11,000 on Tuesday at the Cotton Stakes Classic in West Monroe, La.
This is the first win for Lil Sting Rey, who is sired by Dual Rey and out of by the San Jo Lena mare Sanjo Lisa. The gelding has now earned $127,458, with $50,518 of that banked prior to the Cotton Stakes, when he made several Open and Non-Pro finals with his co-owners.
Cat Mom Do, a 5-year-old mare ridden by Matt Gaines, of Weatherford, Texas, and owned by Chuck and Stephanie Roven, of Los Olivos, Calif., finished second with a 221.5 effort that added $9,100 to the horse’s $155,742 prior earnings. Cat Mom Do, by High Brow Cat and out of the Docs Stylish Oak mare Moms Stylish Babe, won the Classic/Challenge Open in February at the Tunica Futurity. Gaines also rode the horse to the NCHA Summer Spectacular Classic/Challenge Open Reserve Championship.
The Cotton Stakes Classic continues through Sunday, with the Derby Open finals set for Wednesday, Sept. 11, and the Futurity Open finals scheduled Thursday, Sept. 12.
