Dont Look Twice & One Time Choice Top Mercuria/NCHA Open

PRappCHedlundPhil Rapp & Cody HedlundBig scores were posted during the Mercuria/National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) World Series of Cutting finals at the Idaho Futurity, but two Open horse-and-rider teams surpassed the difficult competition.
On Sept. 1 in Nampa, Idaho, One Time Choice, by One Time Pepto, carried Chubby Turner to a 228 from the fifth draw in a nine-horse finals. The performance brought the crowd to their feet and earned the duo a check for $8,423. One Time Choice is owned by J Five Horse Ranch, of Weatherford, Texas.

Dont Look Twice (High Brow Cat x Tapt Twice x Dual Pep) walked to the herd two draws later with Phil Rapp aboard. Cutting’s all-time leading mare and all-time leading rider matched the 228 to share the Championship.

Rapp, also of Weatherford, indicated that his goal for the Waco Bend Ranch-owned mare is to make the NCHA’s Top 15 in Open World standings, and from there, he will keep showing her until “she says she’s done.”

Non-Pro

Teles Bout This Cat and Cody Hedlund won the Mercuria Non-Pro with an impressive 225. The mare (WR This Cats Smart x Teles Lies x Lenas Telesis) and her Weatherford, Texas-based owner earned $11,242 for their efforts.

“Gidget” has succeeded all over the country and earned several limited-age and any-age titles, including 2011 NCHA Non-Pro Horse of the Year. Hedlund says he has a baby out of the mare, but plans to continue showing her as long as she stays sound and keeps enjoying it.

Julie Jarma piloted SS Blacks Lil Kitty to a 222 for the Reserve Championship and a check worth $8,831.
