Robert Tieperman & Matthew Dedden Share Derby Amateur Win

RobertTiepermanRobert Tieperman & Sugar FatzThe National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Summer Spectacular Amateur finals were all squeezed into a single day of cutting in Will Rogers Coliseum. The morning of July 24 in Fort Worth kicked off with the Derby Amateur, where Robert Tieperman and Matthew Dedden tied for the Championship.

Tieperman, Midway, Texas, piloted Sugar Fatz (Smart Sugar Badger x NSR Bobra Ann x Bob Acre Doc), a gelding he owns with his wife, Melanie. The duo went early in the 29-horse finals, marking a 217 from the fourth draw in the first bunch.

Sugar Fatz, bred by Bill and Tena Neely, finished as Reserve Champion in the Derby Amateur and Derby Unlimited Amateur at the NCHA Super Stakes earlier this year. Tieperman MatthewDeddenMatthew Deddensaid he was excited to finally end up on top, even if he had to share it.

Dedden rode the Rodney Sharp-bred stallion Cats Miller Time (High Brow Cat x Little Smashed x Peppy San Badger) to a matching 217 from his sixth draw. This was the young rider’s first limited-age finals in the legendary coliseum, and he said he was thrilled to win on his first trip out.

The Co-Champions each earned $5,446 for their success. Sugar Fatz’s Equi-Stat record is now closing in on the $20,000 mark and Cats Miller Time surpassed the $10,000 milestone.

Classic/Challenge Amateur

Gary Rosenbach and Tapt Out returned from a successful showing at this year’s NCHA Super Stakes to win at the Summer Spectacular. Rosenbach made the Classic/Challenge Amateur finals with three horses, but Tapt Out topped his trio.

The 6-year-old gelding (Smart Little Lena x Tapt Twice x Dual Pep), bred by Phil and Mary Ann Rapp, carried Rosenbach to a winning 218 in the GaryRosenbach TaptOutGary Rosenbach & Tapt Out performed well in their last show together.Amateur, worth a $6,110 Champion’s check. The duo also made the finals of the Classic/Challenge Unlimited Amateur, where they marked a 211.

This stellar show was bittersweet for Rosenbach, as the gelding sold immediately following the finals. He said that it has been fun to show Tapt Out, and this was just the way to end their partnership.

The Reserve title went to Taylor Carbo and his 6-year-old stallion Moms Stilish Cat. The Jerry Durant-bred son of High Brow Cat, out of Moms Stylish Pepto by Peptoboonsmal, banked $5,777 for his second-place finish, brining his Equi-Stat record to nearly $180,000. Carbo’s record is nearing the $150,000 milestone.

Derby Unlimited Amateur

Whiskers And Rumors carried Von Sutten to the Derby Unlimited Amateur Championship, worth $4,834. The 4-year-old stallion (Athena Puddy Cat x Whispers And Rumors x Son Ofa Doc) marked a cool 221.5.

Sutten, who co-owns Whiskers And Rumors with his wife, Andrea, is approaching $250,000 in lifetime earnings, according to Equi-Stat. The Fort Worth, Texas-based cutter has seen recent success on this horse at May’s Breeders Invitational and June’s The Non Pro.

Whitt Bell, Hickory Plaines, Ark., rode his mare All About Suzy (Its Just About Me x Slick Aristo Cat x Smart Aristocrat) to a 218, earning the Reserve Championship. The title paid $4,642.

Classic/Challenge Unlimited Amateur

CarlaFunkCarla FunkCarla Funk picked up her first Fort Worth title when she and Suemma Cum Boon marked a 219 in the Classic/Challenge Unlimited Amateur worth $3,349. The pair also made the Classic/Challenge Amateur finals, where they tied for 15th and secured another $2,632.

Funk, Elk City, Okla., owns Suemma Cum Boon (Duals Blue Boon x Suemma Cum Laude x Smart Little Lena) with her husband Robert. They purchased the 6-year-old Heiligbrodt Interests-bred mare from Kobie and Paula Wood.

Funk, who trains with Beau Galyean, credited her trainer, his family and their help with making her win possible.

A three-way tie for Reserve Champion was earned with a 216. Antonio Barrios, riding High Up Cat, Libby Bowman, riding Rich n Snazzy, and Ryder Carpenter, riding Blazin Flash, split the title.
