Continuing a string of wins on his wife, Michelle’s, horse Merada Jo, Bill Cowan won the 4-Year-Old Non-Pro on Father’s Day with his family looking on. He said The Non-Pro Plus the Open in Oklahoma City,Okla., proved his favorite show of the year so far.
Michelle will continue to allow him to show the horse (Cats Merada x Sanjo Sue x San Jo Lena) since the pair have a hot streak going, Bill said.They also won the Breeder’s Invitational Derby Non-Pro on May 25 in Tulsa, Okla.
At The Non Pro plus The Open, Cowan, Ardmore, Okla., scored a 221 on the horse his family calls “Joey,” earning $5,783, and also made the finals on a second horse, Pink Smoothie (Peptos Stylish Oak x Smooth Little Kitty x Smooth As A Cat).
The Reserve Championship went to Melissa Lyons, La Marque, Texas, on Studio Quixote Cat (Cats Quixote Jack x Studio Lena), scoring a 217 for a $4,565 paycheck.
Brad Rogers, Madill, Okla., made it look easy with a mark of 223 on his Smart Lookin Mate (WR This Cats Smart x Featured Mate x Smart Mate) to win the 5/6-Year-Old Non-Pro and $4,075. The 2008 mare was bred by Wagonhound Land and Livestock.
Reserve Champion was Tiffany Sternfels, Plattenville, La., and Ladys Surprise CD, bred by Dustin Adams. Sternfels and Ladys Surprise CD (CD Olena x MH Lay Down Lady x Little Dyno) earned almost as much as Rogers because they also won the 5/6-Year-Old Limited Non-Pro with a score of 220. The combined checks came to $5,103.
New Horse Helps Hilary Watson Win $35,000 Non-Pro
Hilary Watson didn’t take long to synch with her new gelding Travalin TR, winning the $35,000 Non-Pro finals decisively with a score of 220.5 at The Non-Pro Plus the Open on June 13 in Oklahoma City. The win was good for $4,680.
Hilary and husband Tom, Westwood, Kan., purchased the 2006 gelding (TR Dual Rey x Travalin Miss Peppy x Travalena) in March. Travalin TR was bred by Allan Larsen.
The Reserve Champion was Cade Hansma, Weatherford, Texas, who scored a 218 on a gelding she is sharing at The Non-Pro with her mom, Julie . Cade rode Chucks Little Pepto (Its Just About Me x Little Pepto Gal x Peptoboonsmal) to score a 218 and earn $3,621 only a couple of sets after her mother made the finals of the 5/6-Year-Old Non-Pro on the gelding with a 216.5.
Julie and Chucks Little Pepto, bred by Bluestem Ranch, also earned $1,180 in a three-way tie for third in the $15,000 Novice Non-Pro on Wednesday.
Also making the $35,000 Non-Pro finals along with Cade was her twin sister, McCall, born the same year as her horse, family favorite Capoo (CD Olena x Hicapoo x Doc’s Hickory). The 1996 mare, who
earned $138,224 with Paul Hansma in the saddle, according to Equi-Stat records, was bred by Jim and Mary Jo Milner. Placing fifth, McCall added $1,768 to Capoo’s lifetime total.
