As the sun went down in Pueblo, Colo., on Thursday, May 2, the first of the NRCHA Hackamore Classic horse show competitors entered the arena for the Open and Non-Pro Two Rein classes.

Last to work in the Open Two Rein was the formidable combination of Lyn Anderson and Tuckers Smart Cat (WR This Cats Smart x Smoke Time Tuck x Doc Tom Tucker). They bested the field of eleven entries when they scored a 145 in the rein work and a 147.5 in the cow work. The win paid $1,509.

The Reserve Championship ended in a tie between One Time Rey Jay (One Time Pepto x Hickorys Red Rey x Doc’s Hickory), shown by Jake Telford for Holy Cow Performance Horses, Texas; and Bettin Yer Smart (Smart Little Lena x Bet Yer Boons x Peptoboonsmal), owned by Debra Brown & Larry Licking. Both scored a 288.5 composite, and both took home a check for $1,192.50.

The fun continues outside the show arena at the NRCHA Hackamore Classic in Pueblo, Colo., with the Exhibitor Party and Stray Gathering competition at the Colorado State Fairgrounds, Friday, May 3 at 5:00 p.m.

The Exhibitor Party features a Fiesta Dinner and drinks for those 21 and older. The meal is sponsored by Quintana Performance Horses. Adult beverages are provided courtesy of Breckenridge Brewery, owned by Trish and Scott Smiley; Butch and Charleen Morgan, who donated the Pendleton Whisky; John and Gretchen Keller, who donated wine; and Clymer Performance Horses, who also sponsored wine and helped plan the event. Live musical entertainment will be provided by Lobo & Sheryl.

Following the dinner, the no-holds-barred Stray Gathering contest will command attention in the show arena. This is a rough and ready, timed team roping event with an estimated jackpot of more than $5,000 up for grabs. Each four-person Stray Gathering team will break into two pairs. When two steers are released at the far end of the arena, each pair of ropers must head and heel the two steers. Ropers may only rope with their pre-selected partner and each roper may only rope once. When the steers have been roped, they must be tied by any three legs and remain tied for six seconds. If one or both steers come untied before six seconds have elapsed, the team will receive a no-time. Teams will have two-and-a-half minutes to complete the stray gathering task, or receive a no-time.
